Title: wfp ? please read and add
Post by: Window Washers on September 19, 2009, 09:06:20 am
Intersted to know if your wfp tank in your van leaks from the lid.
I have three wydale tanks each of which leak from the lid.

Your thoughts and please vote on poll.  ;)

each has air vent in the lids,
I never have a problem with the system so no air blockage problem or the water would fail to go to brushes air gets out as does the water :-[

No problem with my 400ltr flat tank. Lid taken off every day for the past 30 months never leaked.

Are yours flat or upright tanks Ian?

We've got three 500l flat tanks with vented lids.  If the tanks are filled then we do get leaks on the way to the first job of the day.

We're considering changing to a sealed lid, drilling a tiny breather hole and inserting a small section of tubing to eliminate the problem of a vacuum.

2 leak and 1 does not.

Trust the bigest tank in the van to leak. Pain in the A................!

I have an older lid which seems to be of better quality. Cant swap them around as I have vented the other two. Might as wall have not... ;D

I also did something similar, never take the lid off now and NO leaks  ;)

I don't see why we should have to fix it, if this is a manafacturing fault.

If these tanks were advertised "there is a very good chance this tank will leak from the lid"

I'm going to call wydale on Monday and see what they have to say

There are two types of Wydale lid -

The one as pictured that has an external moulded male tank thread with a screw-over lid.  These ones do tend to leak a bit more.

The other type has an internal moulded female tank thread with a screw-in lid which does not leak as much.  I have this type and have taped over the vents and they do not leak at all.  I then put a pin-prick in the tape which is enough to vent the tank.

These wyvale tanks leaked no matter what i tried i ptfted it had 3 new O rings sent out to me tried 3 new lids ptfted the thread on the actual tank and not 1 of those things worked, after a whole winter with 2 wet footwells i went for a custom made tank.If your going to go for 1 of these tanks go for a flat 1 cos i know of a few that have them and they don`t leak anywhere near as much if at all dur to the lids being recessed into the tank rather than above the tank.

My 500L leaks when full. I just put a  large cloth over the whole lid and tuck it in around the base of the lid, prob solved.

my wyvale upright 400 leaks really bad on the way to my first house. I just ignore it now but it would be nice to get  it sorted

Right. I've put some ptfe tape on the thread (almost the whole roll) and tightened it will all my strength. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

Have you a rubber gasket in the lid?

i tighten the lid by hand then use a old screw driver and hammer to tap( against the ridges on lid) to tighten it further. 5 /6 gentle taps stops mine leaking.

a tank designed to carry water should not leak as it is meant to be filled up ::)

Please keep the ways you have cured your tanks from leaking though, because I am going to be talking to them monday/tuesday.

please add to the poll as these result will be talked about

Try puting a strong plastic on then scewing the lid on top of the bag make a few small holes in the bag under the lid this has worked in other applications before

A lot of car valeters use these type of tanks (I used one for years myself) and have the same problem, I've bought tanks from several different places but these black lids always leak.  It seems when tight it's tight because the cap is touching the tank, not because the rubber o-ring has sealed - then leaks.  The vent in the middle is S shaped and doesn't let water out, just the threads/cap seal.
I currently trad clean,  but will be getting a tank again soon, and like the pictured solution of glueing in shut permanently.
