Title: upholstery cleaning
Post by: coyote7 on September 17, 2009, 02:05:51 pm
Hi guys.
Have booked in quite a few upholstery jobs this week, sofas and chairs and was just wondering what methods you use as its not an area i have done loads in. I use a porty and tend to use prespray gold and clean with f/f rinse if i could have your thoughts that would be great. I have only been using liquid chemicals as opposed to powder so not sure if that makes a difference ???
Ive not done a upholstery course but am thinking it will be a good idea to get my arse booked in on one soon ;D

Where abouts are you? Obviously training is paramount but as you've booked the work in, I'm guessing you're just going to crack on anyway. I would say the biggest thing is to avoid over wetting, running the colours, ripping the material etc etc :o

You really should be utilising at least one air mover and keep the psi down depending of course on which upholstery tool you are using! Take your time, if you've done a 3 piece suite in under 3 hours, you're doing something wrong. I take my time on sofa's as it's very easy to miss something if you're rushing! + I actually enjoy cleaning upholstery, I find it theraputic!!!!

The reason I ask where you are is because maybe someone would show you exactly how it's done and avoid you having to spend a fortune on a new sofa if all goes tits up!

I wouldn't want an untrained C/C cleaning our sofa.... It cost us the best part of £3k!

Thanks Colin some good pointers. I did have a day out with someone when i was previously working for my old company but was a while ago so don't remember it all. I am always careful and use the safest methods but am sure i could be using better products and techniques.
I am based in Wiltshire. Are there any courses local for upholstery cleaning does anyone know?
My results have been satisfactory but as i am not 100% it reflects the prices i charge i know with more confidence i could chage more as i know the job will be getting done exactely as it should. Any more tips please let me know ;D

Firstly you have to differentiate which method to clean whether it is wet cleanable or whether it has to be dry cleaned.Hoover the upholstery all over ,this gives you a chance to check out any problems ,then prespray, brush in and extract .I use a shampoo to prespray and fabric safe to extract .
