I was wondering, I have been WFP for the last 6 years and dread to think how much water I use. I make water for my van and my mates.
Has anyone on here ever got approached by the Water Board, or been 'grassed up' to the Water Board?
-
all they can do is put you on a commercial metre, which I have been told by some WC's that a commercial water only metre is cheaper than a residential water and waste metre.
-
My water board knows they are losing a fair drop of water in my cul-de-sac they just haven't twigged it's me.
-
Just tell em you use rain water from water butt in your garden. They dont own the rain now do they.
After all how are they gonna be able to prove it one way or another?
-
They come round every few months with earphones trying to find the leak ;D
They have a meter at the end of the road so they know water consumption has gone up.

Switching To A Commercial Water Meter
You will have to pay for the cost of the meter and fittings. If you wish the Company to carry out the installation, this will be at your cost.
THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU FOR A ½” SUPPLY
Prices Exclude VAT
£ P
1)
If the external stopcock at your property has recently been replaced with a combination meter/stopcock box a meter can be fitted at a charge of:
134.00
2)
You can purchase the meter and fittings for
installing externally.
149.00
3)
The Company will supply and install the meter in the highway.
310.00
4)
For commercial properties, a meter may be installed internally. You can purchase the meter and fittings from this Company.
75.00
5)
You can purchase the meter from the Company and the fittings elsewhere.
60.00
In the cases of Options 2, 4 & 5 you will need to engage a private plumber to carry out the installation and provide details of the installation arrangement. In some commercial properties where access can be guaranteed during normal working hours, an internal meter may be permitted.
N.B. It is necessary for a free survey to be carried out to determine if it is practical for a meter to be installed.

they can't give me a meter
i live in a flat and our water supply is shared with the flat downstairs and we share a stop cock ;)
it only splits into 2 supplies inside the property
-
Yep really, they told me they are 'losing' three cubic metres of water every twenty four hours. I reckon that's my 1000l plus rejected water. They keep sending guys with headphones and a stethescope thing that they plonk on the ground listening for water.
My waste goes down the soakaway at the back of my house so I suppose they can't hear it. :)
-
Thing is, look, water is everywhere, hari hari krishna, hari hari.
-
its £170 for a 1000ltr i rang the water board....
-
You cant have a commercial supply on a domestic property.
-

That cant be right :o...are you saying for every 1000lt of water used it costs £170 think they are pulling your leg there...
-
I've seen the leakage detection team round our way a few times.
My van says window cleaner on the side. But they have never said anything to me...
I like the point about harvesting rain water. Might be an idea
-
I've noticed the water board lurking at the entrance to my estate the past few mornings. I live right by the entrance.
Also I've noticed a water van knocking about on my round for a couple of days. Don't know if its the same one though.
If I get tailed, ill loose them

think i read it on here ages ago about a wc:
the water board was doing the same as to ftp, puzzled about the loss of water, so they dug the road, then someone clocked his wfp vans, then put him on a meter then billed him for the road.
-
So, are we obliged to inform the waterboard of what we do? No one's ever told me I have to inform anyone?
-
the amont of water we use in reality is minimal compared to other industrys like factories and manufacturing.
thing is water boards are under pressure all the time to stop the leaks or at least to find them, especially in the south of the country. so if you've got 2-3 cubes of ibc fills a week then to them it's puzzling.
-
i knew a guy whose premises had been "overlooked" and no water bill had been paid since 1969 . there was a bit of a hoohah when the board found out he had been pressure washing and allsorts there but they only backdated him a 5 year bill
-
the water board actually have the power to put every house in the country on a meter if they wanted to, and there is nothing that anyone can do about it, they just choose not to as it is expensive
-
a tip,
if you every have problems with the water board pipes and they try and bill you for it, say for instance that you snapped the stop cock, ask to see there maintance records for your street to prove that it was fine before hand, they dont keep records which they shoulds as aint got time to check them all, this saved me £500 once, i got told this by a man who came to fix it, and he told me what to say when they phone me trying to get me to pay the bill
-
Chap across the road from me is a manager for South West Water. He washes his car every week with them pole on a stick jobbies.
I've got a 2000litre rainwater/harvesting/storage tank in my garden and he watches me washing my own windows with WFP most week-ends. He couldn't care less if I'm on a meter or not as he wastes plenty himself with sprinklers and the likes for his garden.
-
why would he bothered about rainwater :-\
-
All these myths.
If you are unsure phone the water board annonymously.
They cant force window cleaners to go on a water meter.
They cant put you on a COMMERCIAL supply on a DOMESTIC property.
-
why would he bothered about rainwater :-\
He doesn't know that.
-
So I guess the answer to my question is...no-one!
I suppose it would be rank hypocrisy to penalise someone for water wastage when they lose a large percentage due to leaky pipes....
-
it cant be £170 per 1000 litres :o, if so we will al be out of business the moment they install these meters, If someone worked part time 9am till 2.30pm they would use about 1300 litres of pure water, thats probably more than 2000litres of tap water to make 1300 litres of pure so just water alone will cost more than £300 a week! even the £200 a day guys would struggle with those costs, who ever you spoke to must be misreading the figure, or i need to go trad! :'(

Of course it's not true, it's more like £1.70 (waste included) for 1m3 (1000l), he must have misunderstood. One seventy can easily be mistaken for one hundred seventy.
Most people on a meter can verify this figure, or something in that neighbor hood. £170 for a couple of toiletflushes, bath and washing machines is of course not possible.
-
thats rubbish im on a water metre and it says on my bill it costs about 98 pence per cubic metre of water wich is 1000 litres.
-
sorry its £1.70p not£170 and thats for 1000ltr and yes you can have a commercial supply on a domestic property.they put a seperate metre on and away you go they put 6% every year to with inflation a small charge year..

When I started WFP four years ago, I wrote to Southern Water (e-mail) and told them what I was doing.
The only reply I got was concerned with the possibility of a ban on the use in the event of a drought order. No mention of wanting me to go onto a meter.
A couple of years later I contacted them again as my usage had gone up (a lot). I had a discussion with someone in their office who tried to say I ought to go on a commercial metered system. I asked if they could force me to - they said no so I didn't ::)
There are at least four separate records of me contacting them regarding WFP, but never any insistance that I should go on a meter.
Instead of worrying and guessing, you should contact them and tell them what you are doing. That way they can't turn round in the future and start making silly demands for backdated usage etc.
Even if you have to go on a meter, it's just a business expense, and in the great scheme of things only a minor one.
There are far more important things to spend your time on, like becoming a millionaire before you retire ;D
-
i spoke to wessex water different area, where are you southern water, the main reason why i spoke to them is if i am making water its the sewer charge i dont want. why would i want to pay that when the water is not going down the sewer, the sewer charge is nearly the same as the bill so if you dont do it that way you are paying double bubble . im not worrying and guessing i did not want second hand info thats why i rang them i think things will be changing as there are alot more window cleaners than there was four years ago, commercial supply is ok least you can claim for it regards carl..
-
i was under impression it was something like £2 a square meter
-
Aim on a water meter and pay £120.00
When I move aim going to build a rain harvest!
