I was going to buy some barrels for water storage and when a friend was getting rid of some i jumped at the chance to have them off his hands. Paid £14 for 3 x 150L barrels.
I never thought until i got home that they had been used for carrying used chip fat to be processed.
Ive jet washed them out and they look clean. I put some pure water in them and you can see oil floating on top.
Have i wasted my money or is there something i can clean it out with ?
Be honest, id rather chuck them than try something that might not work and waste more money.

Hot water and detergent will probably do the trick.

mate, you can pick up a 1000l IBC for £35.
i picked one up from a printer recently, had water based something(!) in it, wash with detergent and rinse, rinse, rinse, and rinse again, come up fine.

if you arent in a hurry ,if you fill it right to the top ,all the oil will float to the top . i once did this with a 205 litre drum that had engine oil in . itll take a while though(few days)

Does it have to be pure water or will normal water do the trick ?

£14 is not a lot to loose - why not bin them if you aren't sure? Can't think of anything worse to smear over the windows and contaminate your brush to be honest.

just tap water . if your drums are semi transparent you can see the dividing line between the oil and the water below it(every single bit of oil will get to the top after a few days ) if you then arent sure you can pour it out, just gently put a garden hose into the drum, turn on the water (very very slowly) and oil will be out !
