Would it be problematic if someone 30mins down the road had the same web address only mine is .com and his is .co.uk??

What are you wanting to do with your website? is it to give information or is it for high google rankings?

Loads of people in my area have the same words ie carpet cleaning (town/county etc) and .co.uk there's no problem there if that's what you mean.
If however you call it Bobscarpetcleaning.co.uk and your competitor down the road is Bob's Carpet Cleaning then it may be an issue.

Good way of putting it Derek, it can also go the other way to some of your work could go to the other company. We have a cc business with very similar name to us (we started up about 6 months before him) we get people saying Mrs B From Mop Cleaning recommended us for carpet cleaning. I think oh lovely but never heard of her in my life, which is good for us but how many of our customers are getting business name confused too.
Not a good idea if you can help it

Our business names are different but the carpetcleanersbelfast bit is the same. Actually its Doug who owns it not the local company.

I wouldn't hesitate for one minute to use a name similar to one of Doug's site the way he uses the internet then it must be an occupational hazard for this sort of thing to happen. he does what is best for his business and you must do the same.
this isn't a dig at Doug ( I have carpetcleaning hull.co.uk) one of his sites.
its just business

Actually carpetcleanersbelfast.co.uk is available

Hi Guys
I'm off to Lille in morning for a few days so thought I better reply.
The nature of websites is that the descriptive name does help rankings and therefore a number of very similar web addresses will be available and promoted.
Most people including me have seperate business names to our website names and provided there is no attempt to mislead anyone, then I cannot see a problem.
I did have a nice email from a Colchester company , saying the name I had put on my site was very similar to theirs, so I changed it, as I had no idea of their name but also had no intention to pass myself off as them.
Cheers
Doug
