... forward the expense to the customer e.g. £6+vat so that's £7.05 please Mrs Bloggs. Or do you round your price so it hits a round pound?
-
Actually £6 plus vat is £6.90 (15% at present not 17.5% )
When we went Vat registered the rate was 17.5% so we rounded the numbers down so not to effect the customer too much, and before anyone says we would be losing out we wouldn't be because being on the Flat rate scheme you only pay the Vat man 11% so there's scope to make a bit of money on that.
It went a bit pear shaped when the Vat rate went down from 17.5% to 15% becuase the nice rounded numbers we had became daft numbers like £14.72 and £12.06

What do window cleaners get classed as under the flat rate VAT scheme? Is it 11%

Yes 11% (Cleaning Industry)
So you could charge the customer 11% and make nothing or charge them 15% and make a bit of money on it. Not a lot but it does make up for doing the vat paperwork. ;)

thanks for your reply, I have been reading about the flat rate scheme, and was wondering what we came under so that is helpful too. Like you I would consider a bit mad charging silly numbers like the examples you gave, so would probably do a bit a rounding as well when the time comes.

Don't forget that come December or it might be January the rate is going back up to 17.5% although there is some speculation that it might go up to 20% in order to retrieve the 'lost' revenue from the current 'dropped' rate of 15%
If you can wait until January then you will be able to calculate rounded up/down numbers. Do it before that then you will end up with daft numbers again when the change happens.

Helen,

Absolutely yes
Is this voluntary under the 68k threshold?
Yes, until the point that you know or suspect that you will reach the threshold figure in that year.
So if you suddenly hit on a super contract that will in the near future take you over £68k then you 'should' register for Vat.
