I'll tell you what counted for me - the first door I knocked was a 'yes'. That was a big boost for confidense. Keep going.

I went out first time tonight to domestic houses and got 6 out of the 20 or so I asked, but then hit a street where everyone seemed to have someone already so gave up for the night (1 hour out).

I personally wear a company logo embroidered top (around £8 each max from http://www.eliteindustrial.co.uk/ ) and try to be as polite as possible. " Sorry to disturb you, I'm just trying to build up my local window cleaning round, do you have / need a window cleaner at the moment ? " Most people are polite and just say we have someone or we actually don't have someone. I'll then offer them a price and stress a high quality finish. If they accept I'll then note down the number (having a notebook and pencil - pencil won't run out and make you look silly) and tell them when I intend to first clean and that I'll put a small note through to let them know I've been etc.
I'll then give them a card so they know I'm genuine.
I've also found a good tactic is when they tell you " ohh we have someone - my hubby/me does them " I'll say - here's a card anyway if you change your mind, I only charge £x (having estimated roughly before knocking) and do a very professional job. I tried this last night, and out of the 5 or 6 that said this, 2 booked in, and 1 other sounded like they'd be calling.
