Title: REGISTER BUSINESS NAME OR NOT?
Post by: jlo on July 27, 2009, 12:42:56 pm
Do I need to register my business name when starting out?

My wife started her own Domestic & Commercial cleaning company. She checked with companies house as there was/is nobody with the same name then paid for the name ,for the first year, but hasn't renewed since.

I am wondering therefore, when I set up in in cc'ing, If the name I choose isn't down with companies house, am I handing money over needlessly each year.
How many of you have registered your name & renew each year?

Thanks in Advance

Jason

Sorry don't mean to offend but not sure you understood my question.
I know how to register the name, it's if most people do or not?

Looking at the amount of people that have read this but not given their input I assume not.

I think therefore I have answered my own question.

 ;)

I never registered my business name and been using it now for 19 years.

Just check thro directories and whatever other source you can that no one else in the area you want to cover has the name you want.

if your a patnership or sole trader you can register your company name but then you also need to submit accounts (i think) not fully sure was a bit confused at this with the accountant. I think you pay a holding fee too.

Its kinda like a half way step to going a ltd company and having your company registered with companies house.

So the answer to your question - Nowadays you do not need to register your company name like you used to back on the old days, and just follow joe's advice.

if you go onto namesco you can register a name for £10 with a free email account with name. Cause its so cheap why not? my only concern when your business is word of mouth would be to change ur name later on and miss clients.

ive done mine the only reason is to protect the name you are building up.

Not sure  :-\

but my reply is that you can register your company name so that no one else can take it. However you still register it with companies house and have to submit records although technically you will not be a ltd company or be required to do vat returns it will still cost more at the accountants thou.
