We are doing some carpets for a customer next week.
While we were their she asked about her laptop she has dropped it.
It now says on boot up
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application"
That as far as it goes.
It a sony running XP.
I want to see if we can find an answer when we go next week.

Are you having a laugh. Next thing she will be asking you to bring her some tampons ;D. Its a carpet cleaning forum not an IT forum.

On a more sensible note, it's a good idea to get a network of people doing other services who have been recommended to you.
Then when stuff comes up in conversation you can pass their details on. The custy is grateful and you usually get the favour returned in the long run.

This is often caused by a virus. Usually because it is blocking a process from
running. Or a corrupted system file which cannot run.
The official procedure is a repair install. Boot the comp' from the Xp disk, go through
everything as if installing, eventually it will find the old installation and ask if you want
to repair it.
Pc World will wipe the comp' and re-install Xp and charge £50!!!

It should say which application failed to initialise,this may give us more of an idea as to what is wrong.
Problem with computers is it is very difficult to diagnose problems without seeing the machine to see exactly what is going on,bit like ringing a garage and asking them why your car won't start :)
Can they start the pc in safe mode (F8 key on bootup)and try a system restore to an earlier date when all was well.-John

Mmm! Funny one to post on Carpet cleaning.
If she dropped it. Can she hear a small clicking noise? If so she probably has damaged the HD (Hard Disc).
And requires a new HD and the OS to be reloaded.
Depending on the make and model of the laptop she will either have the OS cd or it will be on a hidden partition on the drive. She will need to reboot and watch the screen - it should give you thoption to reload. - this is not System restore. - but all data will be lost.
If no clicking then she will need to reload the software. The error is not caused by a virus.

Failure to initialize can be caused by several different virus, They modify the relevant .exe file to run their own code first. this is why some anti virus sites cannot be viewed, as the trojan blocks them in Internet explorer,
they can also alter the anti virus software so that it cannot initialize, or cannot update itself. Or modify
firewall settings
It could be a hardware problem due to the trauma of dropping.
But once again the official Microsoft procedure is to do a repair install, theoretically if it is a hardware
problem setup should find it.
If the computer will run, then scan with Malwarebytes anti-malware first, to rule out a virus.
If the comp has a reload cd, don't use it borrow a copy of Xp to do a repair.

when starting the laptop keep pressing F8, this will load the laptop in safe mode (not all the bits are running inside), click start applications and system restore, and reset the laptop days before she dropped it, or after starting in safe mode run an anti virus.
failing that it could be knackered and then it depends on replacement againist repair

This customer is concerned about being ripped off if she takes the laptop to computer place like pc world. So we said we would Google the fault and see if that came up with anything.
But we knew that some on CIU who knew a bit more about computer would be able to solve to fault.
We are going to try to solve it by going into safe mode by pressing F8 or if that does not solve it try and Boot the comp' from the Xp disk, go through
everything as if installing, eventually it will find the old installation and ask if you want.to repair it as suggested by AJB

If you start tampering with something you haven't got a clue about , you could make matters worse and the end up owning a laptop you didn't want. Helping customers is fine but you have to draw a line and know when to say no.

think some volitive solvent and coffee stain remover should do the trick

Last month one of my customers rang me the night before and asked me to fetch her some cigarettes for when I come to clean her carpets and the best place to get them were Morrisons! I said I'd fetch them but wasn't going to Morrisons to get them as it wasn't on my way, she went quiet and then said OK I'll have to pay the extra then!!!

If it was my own laptop I would definally be able to sort it but a customers is a different matter.
