last year roger (dr carpet) passed a small job my way. it was a wool rug with a small wine stain. when i got there i noticed the owner had had a go with some vanish and lightened the area. i pointed this out but said i would still try and get the wine out, got the wine out, took it back, said because they had ruined the rug in the first place i wouldn't charge for it, apart from the travelling it only took me 2 mins to get the wine out so decided not to charge. they gave me a tenner for my troubles which was nice.
i got laughed at by a few members on here for not charging, think one old man on here laughed his head off at me doing a freebie.
anyway, got a call last week from the said custy, wanted her carpets quoting on.
i quoted £60 for the through lounge and small office.
she said how much for suite?
an extra £90
got the job and did it.
when finished she asked how much for hsl and 6 small removable stool tops. £80, doing that friday
and today i'm doing there friends house, 2 small rooms and small hall, £75
£315 off 1 small freebie, i know who's laughing now.
so anyway
cheers roger, diamond geezer.

Suspect it was a younger man who criticised the freebie Derek as most older c/c would have done what you did.

nothing wrong with using your instincts. did the same for someone myself very imbarrased little old lady with a stain on the b room carpet although took me a little while did not charge ( had been there previous to clean her carpets). she lives in a retirement block of flats and has reffered me 9x now since grand total of £975 .
ps not all younger carpet cleaners robert tut tut.

Derek,
You charged £60 for a Lounge, dinner & office ?? i would have thought you could have got nearer £100 IMO i started off very cheap and am just starting to push / get better prices and dont think im losing work, but still get price shoppers of course, Im not saying your pricing is wrong but i only realised my mistakes by Listening to people like Colin Bright & Shaun Ashmore now i want to be the most expensive & best in my area.

couldn't agree more paul, but its early days for me, need to learn to walk before i can run so to speak, when the work gets too much then i'll start increasing my prices, i can hit £1500 a week quite easily on my prices at the mo so i'm not that cheap, by the way, it took me 2 and a half hours to clean the through lounge, small office and the suite, and the suite was dry when i left, allthough the weather helped ;D can't beat cleaning a suite on the driveway. ;D

Well done Derek just shows you if you go and turn up you can build up a relationship with the customer based on going out of your way and doing an excellent job.
Pricing is a personal issue, I have today done a 6 bed house with 2 reception rooms for £225 :o :o cheap I should think so! but no stairs and didn't move the beds as the landlord said not to but the carpet was a 'minga' TM's do make it easy though.
Based on these kind of jobs I have a landlord that has booked in another £530 of work on the strength of it, and his brother is the manager of loads of flats in Sheffield centre, being there and doing a good job and a bit of personal selling is what Derek is on about, I think they call it the business multiplier AKA recommendation.
