Title: protecta kote
Post by: richyp on July 05, 2009, 11:33:56 am
hi
i normally get my vans done with speediner and its normally sprayed on rather than painted on. swb relay vans which i normally buy every 3 years normally cost around 600 but my new van which is a long wheel base is going to cost double that so i was wondering what kind o job this protecta kote does and is it easy to apply. also i want a good finish as the van is costing over 20 grand so i dont want it to look a mess... any help would be great guys

if your spending over 20 K on the van why cut corners now for the sake of £600 ?

Im doing my van floor aswell,i had to remove plyliner from the floor
and then spend 2 days removing gripfill of the metal floor, im told to use primer
on bare metal before applying protectakote , Ive bought 2 spray tins of
plasti-kote primer super from b&q ,is it the right primer for the job, also
when do you use the xylene cleaner ,is it before putting on the primer
or before putting on the protectakote paint itself.?

I need to do it this week as im getting van fitted out next week.
any advice would be appreciated. :-\

I'd consider painting some paint stripper on the your van floor 1st then using an angle grinder fitted with a wire brush fitting remove all the paint on the floor. then prime and protectakote it.

Prep is everything when it comes to getting a good finish.

I'll be doing my own new van with protectakote next weekend. I pick the van up on the 10th and am very excited as I've never even seen it!!

I did mine myself, just sanded the floor, then applied the protectokote, I think it looks ok, and does the job.

My car spraying brother tells me that you need to 'key' the floor up until there are no shiny bits left ie use a scotch pad or sand paper. No need to prime the bare metal unless you are a purist as the coating is a hard primer itself.

I would get more than you need so you can do all of the wheel arches and up the back doors 6" or so,do the whole area where water might get to.

sonofFormby,
I am using blue as well, yours looks good, what did you put it on with,
they say foam rollers the type for gloss paint and a paint brush for the sides.?

Vision, the roller you get with the kit isn't very good, I just used a paint brush, as you need to dab it on as opposed to paint it on.

I used the roller that came with the kit. I made sure that i got the excess of the roller before i used it on the van each time. I used the paint brush for the sides and edges. It would take forever doing the whole lot just with the brush.

I put the plastic side panels back on my van that covered the areas i should have used masking tape on.

I put protectakote on van today, I didnt get a roller with the tin so went out and bought foam rollers, they where rubbish, used paint brush and applied first coat
took 1and a half hours ,second coat was much quicker, 1 hour. this is the end result.

Hi. I did my two vans with protecta coat before I had the systems fitted.
Tips.
1. Make sure the floor is dry and dust free.
2. Mask off the side about 2 to 3 inches, take time so it looks neat. Paint the edges first then remove the tape before it drys and then paint the floor.
3. keep stiring the paint as it has rubber bits in it to give it the non slip.
4. Use the brush with the kit for first coat wrap it in cling film or foil then you can use it for the second coat next day.
5. If the van is ply lined and is in good nick seal the joints and leave it down.
