You can make your own by wrapping some old towels round the top of your ladders and just tape them to keep them in place.

Okay, okay, they maybe haven't got the same 'grip' as a rubberised set of ladder mits, but I would argue that it's safe as long as your ladders are stable and you don't over reach.

£15 is well worth it mbs. They last for years and the damage that i haven't caused to peoples property is "probably" very substantial.........and worth it alone for the extra "grip" you get when placed on the sill. Invest mate, invest.  ;)

Apart from WFP, ladder mitts were the single biggest enhancement to safety I ever bought.  I just have the ladder on top permanently open by one rung to accomodate them.  £15 is a bargain IMO.  No sideways sliding on sills (except when they are frozen.  No scuff marks on sills.  It would even be possible to slide sideways with the top of the ladder against brickwork.  The mitts stopped that too.  I am astonished that i see trad W/Cs around who don't use this very cheap enhancement to safety.
