Just read your post Jouk and Dave was out of order. If he is bored reading it he simply should not read it. Thats what everyone else does. No need to put a stop to the thread just cos he doesnt like it.
Personally, I think it is just a 'power thing'
PS Dave: Dont take offense, My reply is not meant to be offensive. Its just my opinion. I have asperger syndrome and my wife has just read my reply and thinks you might take offense. Therefore I feel the need to let you know that this is how I read it.

Sorry you feel that way.
The way i saw it, it was just a pointless thread, every time i came back to it , it never progressed, it just turned to chat.
its not only me who has to read the chat posts, every other member has to read through it as well, only to discover its about nothing.
I treat every "chat" thread the same.
There is a section for chat, that is why it was created.

still waiting jouk

Been out so i presume that joes thread complaining about his locked thread has been deleted. This had a poll where you had to vote what you thought of dave, the kindest option being that excitement had gotten the better of him.
I think it's quite funny that Joe should be so cross, and dave should take it all so seriously.
There is a place for chat, but this was a window related issue that turned into a bit of fun. The huckster in me loves threads like that, and i believe they add value, interest and diversity to the forum.
Joe has posted quite a few inventions and novel uses for various gizmos and machines. He must have one of the most active and fertile minds on the forum. To crush him in this way is a bit harsh.
-
Suggesting he is being crushed is a bit harsh
-
Sometimes i am on auto pilot and clean up the posts without thinking if i upset someone.
If we kept all the chatty posts we wouldnt see the wood for the trees so to speak.
I just saw it as the usual chatty stuff and just locked it without meaning to upset anyone.
This very thread is turning into the same, just chat.
I let a lot of stuff ride, but lately i have had a few complaints that I am letting things slide, as one or two of the members on here might testify, so i was making an extra effort to keep things under control.
-
I'm not aware of the particular thread but I am totally with Dave with regards "chatty" threads, especially those that de-rail a topic and go into wise crack mode.
This doesn't mean there cannot be humour in a reply but sometimes a thread can be full of dross, which is fine on the "Chat" section; however this section is supposed to be more of an informative area and it can often be a right pain having to go through 3 or 4 pages deleting post after post of pointless replies and it only takes one so called witty wisecrack to get the ball rolling and before you know it the thread has been spoilt.

Ian, the very same goes though for comments (and I speak of one person in particular recently............although his behaviour on here has been inexcusable for a long time) whos comments are obviously intended to be de-structive, insulting, antagonising, and with an aim of simply trying to cause ill-feeling, unrest and a general sense of bad taste.
Why is someone allowed (through lack of thread editing or more suitably banning) to continue to behave in that way when I was of the opinion that behaviour of that nature is not condoned.
Its the easiest thing in the world to slip into idiot mode, but on here its the hardest thing not to slip into that when others lead the way (some fuses are shorter that others)
I see this forum descending into a sad state of affairs (which other forums already state it is) if people like the individual I am refering to are allowed to get away with their idiotic behaviour without having to answer for it in any way.
Matt
-
oh crumbs!
Not withstanding this, some people are more fragile than others, and take things to heart.
-
I was enjoying the banter, I like threads like this. After all, people don't have to read it if they don't want to. If people don't post on a thread it soon goes to the bottom of the list, but if people are posting they must be interested. The very fact people were interested should mean the moderators should not have locked it, if they were unhappy why not just move it?
-
looks like i missed it all
damm having a life and going out and not taking my netbook :P
-
I do take some blame. I did build the thing up with all the drum roll posts, and add to the sence of anticipation. The thread would have dropped down and been left alone if i hadn't kept plugging it.The reason i plugged it was that i thought it was absolutley marvelous- the idea that a flyer could be so all conquering that we could throw away everything else we'd ever done in it's favour. This was to be something that would utterly amaze us, and that we could leave anywhere with the absolute consequence that once someone had seen it they would show it to others;Phone calls and bookings were guaranteed.
Joe certainly had me hooked, and i didn't really care if the eventual punch line was a let down. I was just dying to know what on earth this crazy off the wall flyer concept was.
I don't see anything so very wrong in that- even on a window cleaning forum- and i don't see having some fun as wrong either.
-

::)
If you havent anything constructive to offer Ewan may I suggest you opt out of offering anything at all.
-
looks like i missed it all
damm having a life and going out and not taking my netbook :P
You've not missed anything Matt - usual drivel from the same suspects!
Been anywhere nice? I had a long break too - took friday and sunday off! Worked Saturday ;D
-
Well, if you respect others in the same way Ewan as you expect to be respected, stop calling people like Cozy a numpty (as you obviously think insults are unacceptable from your last post), stop deleting the posts where you leave the evidence of your unacceptable behaviour (although its stored in the servers cache) stop trying to run people down when they try to help others constructively, then Im sure those people will come back to CIU.
If I have offended anyone then they are free to e-mail me at matt@oakleywindowcleaning.co.uk and Im sure I will be more than happy to apologise.
Why dont you make the same offer Ewan?
-
So what happens now!!!
I specifically came on tonight to follow up on a topic I was very interested in. The poster is/was, probably the most inventive and innovative members on the forum and had something interesting and possibly valuable to offer other members.
If there were some meaningless post on there why not delete them, not the whole topic. So now I will need to log on to Jo's own forum http://www.w.com/ to follow the thread.
Who knows I, and a few others may just stay there.
Unbelievable!!!!! ::)
-
Joek' thread was interesting enough to get alot of guys to post in it. If Dave and Ian started to delete all threads that contained more than, say, 30 posts, then I would have to think twice before I post in that thread. Surely, a thread stands on it's own merrit.
I wouldn't say that CIU is at a low level under other forums. I am the main culprit as far as having a go at Ewan. I admit that. I'm not pleading my case in any way.
I have a short fuse with people i consider to be disruptive for the sake of it.
I'm sorry (really) if I have upset anyone at all. E-Mail is on my profile. However, I don't see what's wrong with a thread that goes a bit "chat"? Have so many complained? That's one of the good things about this forum. Let me please just put this quote in before I get shot down in flames.
I know that Mike is a mod, but I think he led people like me to believe there is a point to what I am bashing out on my keyboard here.
I'm a mod, what I delete is swearing, and any posts which are trying to sell something (we are here to help and entertain each other not make a profit)
apart from that these 2 I let most things go, we are grown-ups we should be able to handle a robust discussion on any topic if we don't agree with some thing we can argue our point of view.
I think this forum is brilliant it has a very diverse collection of individuals, some are intelligent some are thick. its a nice mix
Added later: I'm not telling you how to run your forum, but I'm confused.
-
Just nipped over and they are wetting themselves. We are a laughing stock. Joe is definitely miffed, mostly because he didn't do anything wrong. He hasn't singled me out for any blame, even though i was geeing things up.For those who didn't see the locked thread, it went a bit zany when we started trying to guess what his idea was.
-
I followed the thread Clive and even though it did go a little zany as you put it, I was still interested while being entertained (I know Sad Life I must lead)
Did anyone report the thread to a Mod? I very much doubt it. A mistake has been made and like Tom Gower did in a recent post he apologised.
I dont envy the job of being a mod but keeping control in this manner may result in us all waving a little red book in the air.
-
Tom Gower was one of the highlights for me. He came on and got into a fight, and then joined in the humour.
His suggestion for joe's world beater was a picture of naked man covered only by a strategic cowboy hat, with the strap line ring and all will be revealed.
I liked the fact that he took us at face value.
-
I never usually get involved,
I had a few complaints about the usual suspects insulting each other, so i started to tidy up the forum.
I deleted all the insults, got rid of the useless threads, which the post in question was one of them.
I have to act when i am tired, when i am fed up or even when i have got better things to do.
I make a quick decision of what to do, some people get offended by it, some people can see why it needs to be done.
If some of you got on better with each other, not naming names then i wouldnt have so much moderating to do and i would just leave 99% of things alone.
-
You'll be under house arrest Matt ;D
(Think I evaded the snatch squads in black coats)
-
I would hate to read every bloody thread, every day like the mods have to. I can watch Top Gear or Casualty 1909 if I want. From the amount of traffic on here in one day, every day, I would make more than one mistake or bad call.
In the time, I've been on here, Jouk's thread being deleted, just surprised me.
As I said before, that thread stood on it's own merrits. If you look at other forums, this one has 50 times more traffic, there must be at least 150 heavy posters on here, unlike me, that post quality advice, mostly about WFP. As you know, I'm trad and don't count myself to the quality posters, so because you have made a mistake Dave, stand in the corner for 10 minutes and no talking.
-
Do people really complain about threads, do these people just read the threads and never post,
-
Do people really complain about threads, do these people just read the threads and never post,
Good point
-
Cozy
glad someone understands.
If the post was genuine, it would be started again, IMO i thought it was just a wind up.
I could be wrong
RWC
People do complain, the only reason i was tidying up was because of complaints, mostly about people insulting each other.
People complain about pointless threads as well, why would members want to read through 3 pages of chat. Some people dont mind, but a lot of people do mind.
-
I think you do a great job, and as you know you have helped me with good advice about quotes etc.
Locking and then deleting the thread did add to the sense of theatre, and was blackly funny too as we were all hanging on for the final answer.
If i was a mod id have far more complaints. It is a shame that joe has been left a little dazed, a sort of susan boyle scenario where he devised a wonderment topic that sent us all beserk hitting it, and then next thing he's off. But we shouldn't turn you into simon cowell because of that.
I accept what you say.
-
If I'm watching BBC News Dave, and Top Gear is starting on BBC and I want to watch it, do I keep watching BBC News, or do I change channels?
If a thread goes downhill after 10 posts, I read a different thread.
Just because it doesn't interest me, doesn't mean it's crap.
Rather you than me ;)
-
some one has to referee this forum, imo they do it well with common sense.
who,ed be a ref :-\

I just do the best I can.

Now if this was a sensible thread purely about the how's & why to's of thread moderating half the replies would be deleted as pointless! (and some of those deliberately so!)
Members can read threads or not read them as they so choose, contributing to them if they so desire, but in 'mod' mode you have to read them in a different light, often when someone posts some naff comment out of real context with the thread it ends out de-railing it and there can be endless 'chaff' to sift through to get to the genuine responses, and often someone can be looking for a particular answer to a query or problem they have and get frustrated because of all the off topic stuff.
As mods we have to try and keep a thread on track, doesn't matter if I personally think the banter is pretty funny, or if even with a different 'hat' on I would make a comment of my own, ergo I personally will delete what I view in 'mod' mode as pointless replies.
Occasionally a reply or two can be allowed to slide past as others keep the thread on topic, but when they turn into bloody 'thread virus's' the scalpel of moderation is drawn into play as I surgically hack into the thread to cut out the cancerous replies killing the thread.... ;D (I enjoyed that turn of phrase ;))
As has been said many times before, you want to 'chat' then go to the relevant section of the forum to do so, get caught doing it on this section and whether you like it or not, if noticed your replies will be deleted or, as Dave has done, an entire thread will be locked.
Ian

I feel like my life is on hold, and i'm struggling to concentrate on my work! :) lol
-
What happens when mods get into stuck gramophone record mode themselves. You really should stick to window cleaning issues and leave the overlong surgical metaphors be.I believe your starting point was poinless posts- well i guess it takes one to know one.
For any one interested in Joe's 'best flyer in the world ever', or if you want to see 'the flyer they tried to ban', please start hitting this thread. A proof version is now in circulation along with a short video demonstrating it's effectiveness.
-
I have seen Joe's video of the flier and I do think if this falls on your doormat you will not throw it straight into the bin without first reading it and to me getting a potential customer to read a flier in the first place is a huge part of the battle, how many fliers do we read when we pick them up from the door mat??? I know I must read 10% well if Joe's flier was to fall on my mat then it would fall into that 10% and I would read it because curiosity killed the cat???

ok i have kept you all waiting long enough, but that was due to some technical problems and getting the templates right, as you will see when i put it up at tonight at some point, all my dummy runs where 100% successfully everyone took and read them, also they kept them ,let me get things ready, well i leared a lesson from this, not to post before completion ;D

Quite correct....this is a pointless thread, meandering and basically useless, but that doesn't mean I also cannot contribute to it in an equally pointless way and in doing so, also point out to anyone who can be arsed to read what I say, just how a moderator has to look at a thread...and this thread is also about moderating...as against window cleaning...
I'm not bothering to moderate this thread (unless it gets profane and so on) it can go where it likes, someone else can do the business.
I actually wish I could come on here and goad people, twist the knife, I do to a point sometimes, but I don't do it clumsily...
I've lost count of the times I've almost 'retired' from moderating, not because posters whine when their replies have been deleted or their thread locked, but because so many just don't seem to get the rules here, no matter how many times they are pointed out!
Ian

but because so many just don't seem to get the rules here, no matter how many times they are pointed out!
Should be a premiership referee, bet it pays a whole lot more too for doing the same job.
-
now because i was rushed, i am showing my first templates of the flyers, but to me they are excellent, not one person resisted taking one and reading them, this flyer will be your business card to, they are very impressive, instead of wasting time canvassing just drop them anywhere you like, the flyer will be lifted almost immediately, so you wont get done for littering lol, hit the supermarkets garages, even drop them in your targeted area, any where yo want, there's no limit to this flyer,

Simples really.. Just MOVE the thread to the CHAT section, then its no longer off topic regardless.
Once you rule with a heavy hand people will have to get used to it or go elsewhere.. ive moderated many forums before, and although some people dont like it, the majority do.
By doing nothing for lots of threads then all of a sudden a moderator get the hump or feels it not worth to keep it going just 1 thread gets closed. Its not that way it should be done, and just brings it to attention more.
Be more moderated in your ways, or just leave everything, dont do half measures!
(by the way that was not directed to anyone just said out loud to anyone still stupid enough to be reading this NOW pointless chat thread)
-
now will everyone stop arguing, am sorry i caused such a distrubtion on the forum , please accept my apology,
-
Nice one Jouk, like it, well done really, gonna give it a go for sure. Thanks. ;D
-
I used to be a moderator here, but I was naughtier than the 'children' I was there to moderate.
:-[
-
Jouk, you've done nothing wrong!
GWCS,
Sometimes leaving a thread such as this one can help highlight the problem...for those that waste their time reading it that is!
I rarely lock a thread, usually I'll move it if it is chat or spend forever removing post after endless post until only the salient ones are left....and on a thread like this I feel I can have a good whinge!...even if it should now be over on the chat section...maybe Dave will move it...or lock it...he likes locking threads ;D ;)
Ian
-
The point of the original thread was to allow Joe's exposition of 'the best flyer ever'.We all wanted to know what it was.
I think you've made a pretty good job of it joe.Well done.

and i have changed almost everything on it, but to the untrained eye they are fooled into thinking it is real from at least 3ft upwards, so walking by one on the street head height can be 5ft upwards, it works and i have proved it, did dummy runs it works simple as that, and no shopkeeper would be fooled to accepting it,

I dont agree in locking - because someone will just start another one up regardless - just like this one ::)
Still least we came to an outcome and the flyer got posted :P
Personally id prefer all chat threads to be moved asap. Keep relevant window cleaning issues in the right place and chat elsewhere - it makes easier navigation and reading for all.
Most people will always post in the main used section regardless of other titled sections. There is a for sale section yet people still post here - why because they are too lazy or the readers are too lazy to move to another section..
anyway off topic - nice flyer idea jouk45
-
thanks gwcs, if folk only knew the work that went into that, but was well worth it, once you have the templates its all go,
-
GWCS,
If you have a problem with the moderation of this site, could you please air your views in the off-topic area of this site; not in the window cleaning section.
It really gets annoying when you want to read window cleaning related stuff and there's complaining about the mods. Don't get me wrong, I know both the mods personally and I'm not sticking up for them. I can vouch they're both very human (i.e. make mistakes, won't admit when they're wrong, and ugly to boot), so please use the off-topic area in future.
It also gets quiet on that side of the forum and all the football posts bore me!
-
i got this the idea from this video,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMgKoLunNUs
ok heres how to get by any legal stuff its simple half it, it still gives the same effect.also saves on paper and ink, when you fold it dont do it right to the edge, leave a few mil to fold over, this keeps the note close, so the wind stops it opening
keep it half

Jouk
Are you selling the template to these mate?
Dean
-
no i dont charge money dean , but it is tempting ::) they are fairly easy to make, had around 26 emails asking the same thing,
-
Can I have a template please?
Adie
-
Me to if at all possible joe,
Superb
-
email me with what type of bank note, what you want said, keep it brief though but to the point, and i will ad it to my tasks at the weekend
-
great idea!!!!!
It just took me all of 15mins to download images of google edit in photoshop and print out a basic one.
How did u do that mate?
-
see that was easy lol, remember to leave a few mill to keep it tightly folded good luck let us know how you get on, use them as business cards, it really impresses them
-
lol
-
I would look into the legalitys before printing these flyers/notes.
-
i have to say im impressed, i know i would defo look at it.
Could i please have a template
-
its clearly not a note, and im sure there can be mistakes from noraml paper to what the notes are made of.
-
i did dave, thats why i half them, who is going to take a half bank note as legal tender, half a real note take one half to the shops, they will send you packing ;D you need both parts
-
i have to say im impressed, i know i would defo look at it.
Could i please have a template
I think its cool, but bit hard to use in england innit ronnie, if its scottish note?
PS ronnie, had anyone called matt canvassing on your work?? ON e of my custies gave me a leaflet from him today
-
you can use any bank note, that was just the money we use in scotland
-
sean no pal, not what i know off
-
great idea!!!!!
It just took me all of 15mins to download images of google edit in photoshop and print out a basic one.
How did u do that mate?
I have done one, and i am no computer wizard the only problem i am having problems adding photo, can someone explain how
-
I would look into the legalitys before printing these flyers/notes.
I agree, do to good a job and it’s counterfeit.
You need permission just to copy (take a picture) money if used for commercial purpose!
Some one has already stuck up a link about the requirements of using copied/modified money.
Pretty self explanatory.
-
fair play, a cracking idea
you could even drop them around " high class stores " afterall we dont want just any type of customer ;)
-
