Title: I think i have under priced!
Post by: a900 on June 24, 2009, 04:02:39 pm
Yesterday i gave a house near me a quote. Its hidden away on a street near me. There are five houses down the private road. (Not a long one mind) The lane has a passcoded gate. Big houses down there. Its a large semi-detached. 2 storeys on the front and 3 on the back. Some old leaded windows. I should have added a little more as im sure that they could afford it.

Anyway i gave them the quote and the wife says 'Is that all'. The husband replies by saying to her 'don't say that' with a nervous chuckle.  :-\ It was quite funny really.

I am quite new to window cleaning but i am learning fast.

I can't change me price now can I? Could I say 'sorry i under estimated the work involved my ongoing price will be ...'?

I would just honestly say to them, "I'm really sorry but it took me longer to do than I expected , do you mind if I put the price up a little?". I'm sure with it being awkward windows they'd rather you do them and pay a little more than do it themselves!! .. either that or wait a few months and then put the price up a couple of quid, like you would do with all your work.

theres 4 other houses in that private drive, do a good job and dont get greedy you may pick the others up, then it may not appear to you as an underpriced job.

If you put in a price you are happy with why worry because the wife says is that all? I have priced up many a job when the reply has been is that all, but I am happy with the price and if they are then great everyones happy.  Granted the greedy side of me thinks damn I could of made a few quid more here but in reality you will price up tons of work, not get it and think oh, I should of gone in a few quid cheaper. Swings and roundabouts, rough with the smooth however you look at it do the job if you have underpriced have a word with them they might give you some more money or they might not, only one way to find out but dont worry because of the original is that all you will hear that quite a few times if you stick at it but not as often as you missed a bit!

If you make more than £5.73 an hour you are still out in front compared to filling shelves at B&Q. There is no such thing as the "right"  price for a job. Don't worry too much at this stage, I still screw up after 30+ years

Prices always are difficult, you could have given the same price to one of the neighbours and they may have turned you down flat. You never know

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm quite slow at the moment so i think it will take me an hour and a half.

I could always charge £2-3 more if i get any other properties down there. I think i will have to be careful doing this though as they might talk.  ;D

Using me maths skills ... 123 ... dum d dumm ... i will be earning more than i would at B&Q. Thats an encoraging thought.

That price is so close to what i am now thinking that i should have said.

I am doing the hole house every 10 weeks. But just doing the fronts and 4 downstairs windows at the back of the property in between at 5 weeks.

My dad has not done windows for 6 years now and only cleaned trad.

Why? Hope you are charging the same for every visit.
When pricing, do not worry about" if they can afford it", put your price in and stick to it  :)

My grandad is the kindest man in the world. And that is why he would not have charged more to his cutomers.

He used to do a couple of windows on a house and charge 50p. This was only 2 years ago before he retired.

I am nice to my grandad i just wont go to him for pricing advise.  :D
