Title: shurflo backpack playing up
Post by: jouk45 on June 20, 2009, 08:05:31 pm
today my backpack was playing up, its definitely not the battery, now i thought it may be the pressure switch, when i turn the water flow on, it runs for around 30 secs, sometimes a minutes or so then cuts of, so i took the pole hose connector of the main backpack hose and it works no bother, i even crimped the main backpack hose and it stoped pumping, its got me baffled, you think it could be the flow control ciruit on its way out or pressure switch, i have used it for near 2 years with no problems until now, any help  thanks

i will look into the charger, you cant actualy tell if it is fully charged the battery, its a matter of leaving it on all night, and i just assume its charged, theres no indictor lights with the shurflo charger

I might be wrong but im sure i read in the manual that the light near the on/off switch flashes when the battery is going to run out. But because it is situated under the backpack you cant see it. Just carry a spare battery then if it fails when you put a fully charged battery on it you know your in trouble.

hi jouk

try taking the cover off the pressure switch, and turn the screw

as in tighten it up and see what happens

it should solve your problem

thanks mike, i found the trouble, it was the live spade connector from the pump, although it was connected it was loose, and becouse nothing was there like tape to hold the wires in place, the spade would slide sideways and close down the power every time i move the backpack, i crimped the spade with pliers to make it tighter, and wraped masking tape round the wires and the outlet pipe, was working all day today, and it worked perfectly, ;D thanks guys for all your help

click the dial round to 20 volts and see what the reading is, A fully charged battery should read about 13.5 volts.
I have run a couple of extra wires from my main charger with female spade ends on, I trickle charge the backpack battery with this, as you say, you have no way of knowing if the backpack charger is working properly.
I have  spare battery, so always one in reserve.
If the speed controller is playing up they ain't cheap, you could try one of the £15 Maplin ones and wire in your own switch.

The same thing happened to me and it was the pc board,
removed it took one look and thought £40+ for that your having a laugh
so i bought a flow controller from gardinerpolesystems for £80
fitted that really simple and works better than ever with more control of flow speed rather than just the four settings

the maplins controller is rated at 3A constant or 5A peak, so check the pump draw.

what you need is this one:  http://www.johnhewitt.com/wc.htm
5 position with voltmeter £21 delivered
scroll down and it will be TSR35 MKI Buy It Now

you'll also need a numpty for it, strangely mine never came with one:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1845

i think they are 1/4" spindle, but make sure i've put the right link
