Title: pole section spinning
Post by: concept on June 20, 2009, 06:20:24 pm
the end section of my pole (unknown brand) is spinning, making it very hard work to get consistency whilst cleaning.

i have tried to tighten the clamp section up, but no joy, its as tight as it will go and continues to slip.

can you get replacement collar/clamp sections from anywhere?

You can get replacement clamps for most poles. Post a digital photo on here and someone will be able to identify it for you.

Two popular types are:

Xtel
(http://www.gardinerpolesystems.co.uk/acatalog/X-Tel_clamp_handle.jpg)

and
Universal
(http://www.gardinerpolesystems.co.uk/acatalog/Uni_Clamp.jpg)

If its universal then push the lever as far as you can the opposite way to normal, works for me anyway.

Take both of the both outs and run an angle grinder down the gap, hence making it wider, worked for me on my old fibreglass pole years back when Nelson was a boy.

Must be a different clamp to mine then, are you sure?  this is how I meant and it does buy a little more time with a worn pole. maybe you need to tighten the clamp nut first though.

exactly the same mate. maybe i am just a weakling and couldnt put it that far back!  :-\

think its been nipped up a few times already, but i knew that before i bought it, so its not a problem, it was cheap cheap cheap!

will prob just get a new clamp to make it easy.

Not sure a new clamp is your answer its usually the wear on the pole that's the problem.

I have this problem on one of my poles, two sections will not tighten up properly when they are fully closed up, with mine it is wear on the pole but only at the point where they close, what I do is tighten the clamps with about an inch of the pole still protruding.

I would say that it is not the clamp, put the tape on the pole wear the clamp will sit over it, when you can me I will explain in more detail for you.

I am highly surprised you have not called already as I was expecting it. ;)

if its an xtel  or harris clamp it works good

More often than not a replacement clamp will cure this situation.

If the pole is only spinning on one section (perhaps the top 6") then you may need to build up the surface of the pole by way of a temporary solution. To do this mix up a small amount of rapid epoxy resin and smear on the worn section, making sure that you scrape most of the glue back off before it sets. Leave overnight and then sand the glued area smooth. This should re-build the worn section of the pole.

stuff that, would rather buy another pole!!

the wear is quite visible, so i doubt a clamp would do.

don't open the pole as much  ;) and use the taped part as markers.
Failing that do what Alex said it really is easier and less hassle than it sounds.
