Has anyone tried this before?
I know this sounds nutty and probably is but has anyone gone to a house and just cleaned one pane of a 2 or 3 pane window of a house which they have noticed is never cleaned, just to show the residents just how dirty their windows really are?

nutty.
Also trespass if you're not invited onto their property,...

It's a good idea, not in the least nutty, give it a go and report back.
Presumably they will not be in, so print off a few explanation notes to explain your actions. If you get caught say you are new and cleaning the wrong house.
The note should say something like- Please excuse the unusual approach(they all say that), and go onto to something like- on passing i happened to notice that your windows in particular out of the whole street were unusually minging-
When they realise the trouble you've taken to clean a couple of frames and see the difference they are sure to be thrilled.Make sure you leave a landline number as most people prefer this, and expect your phone to ring fairly soon.
Best of luck, keep coming up with the ideas.

just knock on door an ask them if they would like a quote then your more likely to get paying customers?.

its suprising the amount of custies ive picked up by cleaning the wrong house by total mistake
-
Thanks for the responses
I had a quick look at trespass law and it appears that it is not a criminal offence but a civil offence and one you would be unlikely to be pursued for http://www.naturenet.net/law/common.html#tres
The reasons I ask is that a house opposite which is vacant (previously rented) never had their windows cleaned and my initial thoughts were to clean one pane and put a card through the letterbox, then hopefully the Landlord (on wanting to re-let) or the new residents would realise just how dirty the windows are.
I could just chuck a leaflet/card through the door, which would go in the bin but thought the cleaner window pane would be a longer lasting reminder

come clean all my windows ,,please leave a note to say there done and maybe il call you back once a month ;)

I've thought of having a bit on a leaflet offering to clean one window upto 3 panes for free.
Just to get around the "what's he doing cleaning windows with that pole"
I take it your wfp.
Even if your trad i think this might be a good advert, wouldn't take long to do one 3 pane window or smaller.

if you asked them first maybe, some people like dirty windows and you would make a problem if you cleaned without asking, who ever said go do it and report back should stand in a corner for 15 mins ::)
giving a free demo, could well work if your struggling to get enough new work and is a good idea. just do not do it without their prior knowledge as you could end up in hot water and not the wfp type. ;)

The sort of people who don't give a toss about how dirty their windows are (or untidy their gardens are, etc etc) are likely to give you a slap ;D ;D

Agreed. How would you feel if you got home and some stranger is at your window?
There would be no repeat performance, i'm sure. ;D
