Title: Reference checks
Post by: adrian@abbey on June 12, 2009, 09:10:56 am
Hi all,

When employing new staff, what questions should be asked to the referees in regards to their qualities as an employee?

Am I right in thinking it's against the law for references contacts to give any negative feedback about potential employees?

Regards,

Adrian

You cannot give a "bad" reference, but you can answer the questions in such a way that the reader will be able to read between the lines!

Questions to ask
From and to which dates did this person work for you?
Why did they leave youe employ?
Would you consider them to be reliable?
Were they punctual?
Did they work to a high standard?
Were they able to work unsupervise when required?
Did they fit in and work well with other teams members that you have?
Would you employ them again? The answer on this should tell a story :) :)

So if the person you sacked or if they left you wasn't reliable then you can't answer NO to the question: "Would you consider them to be reliable?"

What ever hapened to telling the truth or telling things as they are?

Personally I would rather say it as I see it, but there you go.
Alot of companies asking for references now do a multi answer section
Tick box that applies
Q: Would you consider them to be reliable?"
A : Very good
B: Good
C:Poor

Doesn't actually state "NO" but if you ticked "C"........
Oh to shoot the PC brigade  ;D
