Title: Do fan jets use less water?
Post by: ftp on May 26, 2009, 07:02:30 pm
Just topped up the van and I reckon to have used 500l of water from nine till five, no major work, no first cleans and no conservatory roofs. I shut off my water between every window too. So just wondered if fans use less than pencils?

How strange.
I have been using pencil jets for 4 years  and have used fan jets for past 6 months, not only save more water, plus love working with fan jets. ;)

Bosh

When you use fan jets you try convincing the customer that your not using a jet washer lol because that`s how it sounds and looks on the glass and i reckon you will get a lot more people moaning about the water or the amount your using and leaving lying around. The rinse is all in the brush and how it will allow water to flow through it,if you use a Vikan brush you`ll find the water will get trapped and even with a good flow of water you`ll still leave bits behind on the glass, where`s with an SL brush you can rinse on with pencils confident that the result will be top notch.

Ive always used fan jets but now i only use pencil jets and pencil jets use less water as you can turn the flow right down but with the fan jets turning the flow right down on them and the water just flicks about the bristles..

Bazz...

I use fan jets all the time as I think pencil ones are crap especially when rinseing on glass that bead,I started off with pecil jets on large commercial glass and they beaded,I would have been quicker cleaning the windows trad with a 3 inch squeegee and mop! ;D ;D ;D ,fan jets  are alot quicker to work with too in my opinion than pencil ones. ;)

Fan jets use about 10% less water in my experience.

I prefer fan jets too.

Nothing wrong with either jet, fan or needle.

Peter Fogwill uses (or used) fan jets in his brushes, he adapted the brushes accordingly by removing a couple of rows of bristles on the inside of the brush, this allows the 'fan' of water an even, uninterrupted flow of water onto the glass, the outer bristles of the brush trap the 'fan' thereby  preventing overspray.

The jets are smaller in diameter so that for a given pressure you get a good spray pattern and should also be able to use less later. This though depends on the water pressure you decide to use.

Are fan jets as effective as needle jets?

Of course they are! People talk all the time of rinsing off the glass, well I for one almost never have done (dependant on the situation) regardless of whether I was using fan jets or needle jets, if anything, for rinsing off the glass the fan jet is better - a greater force of water over the entire width of the brush, meaning you can direct a wide rinse from top to bottom of the window.

You need a good fan jet and a properly adapted brush though.

Oh, in case anyone is wondering, I use needle jets...but only because the brushes that Peter supplies (or did supply) were too heavy, the Gardiner brushes are suburb brushes, light and very effective, but if Alex ever supplied an adapted brush and fan jets I would use them for sure...oh, Peter Fogwill I believe mills his own jets.

Peter does remove a row of bristles yes and when you get a brush you`ll find hardly any bristles left in it,i had a 15" salmon off him once with a whole row removed as the fan didn`t work with them in the brush.Ionic use an overhead fan jet for this reason so not to remove any bristles,it all depends on what type of work you do when it comes to choosing jets but for domestic i would say pencils all the way.

i used peters autobrush with fan jets for the first time today and thought it was excellent , quite light and a really good rinse . also saved loads af water , i used fans on a vikan hilo before and hated it , i,ve been using the gardiner fspl with 4 pencils and along with all my other brushes its now redundant regards alan

A jet far easily shunts a piece of dirt off the glass than fans.
Think about it. A given amount of water can be either made to hit the glass in either a 3mm area (jet) or spread over 200 mm (fan), therefore you have less water trying to knock dirt down with a fan than a jet.
If you've got dead easy jobs with just a couple of weeks of dust on it then fans should be ok, anything heavier than that then using the right techniques with jets are better.
And if you've got window vents then trying not to get water in or on them with fans is near impossible as the water throws up not only horizontally but vertically too.
