Have just had a call asking if we clean "horse rugs".
Answer was no as I'm not even sure what they are :-\
Those smelly, heavy, out in all weathers, waterproof cover things that horses wear in cold weather spring to mind but I'm not sure ???
I am sure though that a "horse rug" is nothing like a "sheepskin rug" ;D Can you just imagine...

Nicky,
Are they not saddle blankets?
I have cleaned a few sheepskin ones as a favour to an old customer but have since found a company in my area that does them in an ultrasonic bath, so just refer the jobs on.
-
Hi John,
I just had this image of a horse skin on the floor in front of the fire, stuffed head at one end and four long legs sticking out each with a shoe on the end ;D
I don't know what a horse rug is but I don't want to clean one, I bet they stink!

Only cowboys clean horse rugs. ;D
-
OH NO, YOU JUST CALLED JOHN BOLTON A COWBOY :o
-
Horse rug is just the blanket they go straight in the washing machine 40c. As i have 20 horses in my mansion stables
-
Nickie,
Yes siree maam, he sure did ;)
Paul,
The sheepskin ones are not machine washable - clearly your 20 horses are underprivilaged :D
-
im still paying for the morgage on the stable so asda carrier bags if i had my way
-
Not sure what sort of rugs the Horsey keeper up above uses, but most round here (Sunny Gloucestershire) would not fit in the washing machine.
I have a mate who runs a Saddle makers and he is always getting asked if they clean the horse rugs.......
I've asked him to get hold of an old one for me to have a go at, which is coming on Wednesday. Most of his clients are quite well to do and willing to pay in excess of £50 per rug to have them cleaned this time of year.
He has a big workshop and will both store and give me space to do them for the princely sum of a beer in the local.
If it works out, will be handy to have some business during the quiet times of year........

Are the dyes STABLE in horse rugs?
-
No idea until I get hold of one to test out
-
Jacko,
I think the answer has to be...............NEIGGGGGGGHHHHHH. ;)

Ok then Doug,
We won't ''Saddle'' you with any more jokes, but if you're still '''Hoarse'', best you ''Giddyup'' down to see your Doctor. Don't forget to put on your ''Shoes'' though. ;D

Sadly, :'( Paul never got to test for ''stable'' dyes on the Horse rug. He went to collect from the customer................................and had a ''Refusal''. ;D
Must go now. Going to see if I can get a life. ???
Martin
Ps. See what you've started Jacko!!

This thread reminds me of this old joke.
A guy owns a horse stud farm. One day a friend phones him up , "I've sent a dwarf with a speech impediment to see you. He wants to buy a horse". Sure enough the dwarf turns up.
Dwarf asks "I want to buy a horth"
The owner asks him "Do you want a male horse or a female horse ?"
The Dwarf replies "A female horth"
The owner shows him a Mare.
"Nithe Horth" says the Dwarf, "can I thee her eyth?" The owner picks up the Dwarf to show him the Horses eyes.
"Nithe eyth" says the Dwarf "can I thee her teeth?" Again the owner picks up the dwarf to show him the horses teeth.
"Nithe teeth, can I thee her eerth?" The Dwarf asks. By now the owner is getting a little fed up, but again picks up the Dwarf to show him the horses ears.
"Nithe eerth," he says "Can I thee her twot?" With this the owner picks up the Dwarf and shoves his head deep between the horse's legs, holding him there for a second before pulling him out & putting down.
"Perhapth I thould wephwathe that" said the Dwarf, "can I thee her wun awound?"

Hi BF
Here comes misery guts with no banter.
We ran a riding school for four years and looked after 30-35 horses. Assuming the rugs are the heavey canvas waterproof type we did the following.
We had a fence panel between two posts to hang the rug over along the back seam this supports it while you work and stops it flapping about.. You want a pair of waterproof trousers and then a hose with a very stiff brush to scub the worst of the mud and c**p off. Plenty of water to rinse as you go. This will get 95% of the dirt off. If you use detergent based cleaner it will destroy the existing waterproofing. A pure soap based cleaner would be OK but we rarely bothered as it would not make that much difference. They take a while to dry out but I would think if you put a decent vac on they would dry quicker. The tack shop will have heavy duty reproofer which is similar to tent proof.
Its a mucky job like most horsey things.
I've plenty more tles but thats enough for now.

Thanks for that but I've already decided that it's not for us.
There are just some things that I'm not prepared to end up smelling of and horse manure is one of them. :D
Thanks anyway,
Nicky
