Hi

I've just bought some goods from the states about £195 worth.

In my case there was a fee of £35 which is payable to the carrier, that was VAT plus an airport clearence fee of £8.

Dont know if it would be the same for you.

Dave

Yes Darren Simons right, I purchased some boxes of scrubing pads from a company in Florida 2 months ago, seemed like a bargain until I recieved a letter stating I need to send a cheque to customs and excise for another £28.00 they also charged me a holding / administration fee - Not such a bargain after all.

As far as I know you don't have to pay duty on gifts ;) ;D I think these would make a wonderful present from your friend in the states.

You have to pay the vat, on top. You can declare this before you get the goods then pay the vat to the revenue. Search web for this.
or take a chance that customs does not stop it, by having them sent seperatly and having nothing written on boxes. ie its best to say 'gift' then 'an imported tool dodging the vat man'.
You can import up to I think £36.00 before you have to declare it.

Vat man got me on 10 wii's

Also the VAT is payable on the total inc the CARRIAGE not just the goods you ordered worth bearing in mind if your carriage cost is high ie airfrieght or very heavy.

Done it before, you might get away without tax but that is rare. There is a way round it and it's long winded, you have to go through The Republic of Ireland. Anyway, the simple way is be prepared to pay VAT on it when it gets here.  If you can speak with the seller get them to put a reduce value on the package the only problem with that is if it went missing you would loose out when the insurance payout. For the item description tell them to put "replacement parts" not New Item

Hope it gets delivered by UPS or Parcel Force. UPS best bet to get away without paying VAT. No import tax or license needed.

You do get some bargain off ebay from those yanks Try ebay.com instead of ebay.co.uk  ask the seller if they would ship to the UK. Look out for the ones that say "make an offer" then do like I did, made sure i got a deal.

Happy bargain hunting!
