I've been using DIY fishing poles for about 6 months now; they're great; the only bit of maintenance I've had to do is remove a bit of tape, and replace it 3mm lower than what it was originally set at.  It took about one minute.

They're just so light too.

They're a class bit of kit.

What did you use around the top of the pole to keep the hose connected is it a cable tie?

made this carbon fibre pole today .  total cost around £70 reach about 20 ft weight around 1230g
well i have been using my diy pole all week!
so the benefits are its lightness and ease to use ,it started at about 24ft but was too brittle so cut it down to 20ft and its been perfect for my domestics.
is it slower.....yes of course....however after a couple of days you get used to a new way of working and the operation speeds up.
i cut down an old pole to 4ft to use for the bottoms,so its a case of changing poles.
after one week i would say it takes only a couple of mins longer to do a house.
the body though feels so much better at the end of this week.
so i will keep refining the idea until i get the perfect lightweight AFFORDABLE pole .
bearing in mind that the pole its self was only £15 pound delivered its been money well spent.

Isn't this pole Fibre Glass not Carbon Fibre?

if you cut the end ( last) section down to about 4ft, you can slide off the end and use that for downstairs

works great

would love an slx but unfortunately can not afford one.can you not produce an everyday 24 or 24ft pole based on the slx?
price it around £250 ?     then you really will be up for a knighthood!

did do matt , but the end had splinted. probably worth buying another at that price and cutting it down

what the best bet it to cut the end off the pole and put the brush on the end of that, just make sure your last section is the short bit ( if you see what i mean )

why is it slower to use?
Title: Re: diy pole pics

i would say so. i couldn't be doing with pulling sections on and off every 2 minutes. it would annoy the hell out of me!
Title: Re: diy pole pics
Post by: andyatkinson on April 26, 2009, 07:45:10 am
oh i see so its not telescopic so each section has to be actually taken off etc. so can it sometimes be too long and sometimes too short?

I made one last year but gave it away. I couldn't get on with whe bend after using an SLX and an S2
So, they are excellent cheap light poles but can't be compared to an S2 even if they look very similar. If you've never been spoilt with Gardiners poles you'll be very happy with the homemade versions and for the price you've got nothing to lose.

hi, just made a 30 foot carbon fish pole,

ron thompsoms muscle zone 11m carbon pole from trev's tackle on special £65+£5 delivery.

big thankyou to mike porteous and tosh for all their info on this.

I'm not great at diy but 15 mins and job done.
tip
this is probably realised my most but just in case.

i couldn't get a bentley broom locally for screw fitting, to fit brush and crank joint to pole.

so: i had a spare domestic crank joint undid bolt in middle, put male thread end (longer bit)
in vice and sawed off joining circular bit.

you now have male thread piece thats perfectly fitted to another crank joint.

I didn't want to keep sawing down my top carbon piece of pole so i slid down over top till tight,
marked the excess which hung out through male thread i'd just made.
took off male thread(joiner)
sawed off excess carbon.  then slid back on male thread joiner; pushed down top piece off pole till tight.

It's great no glue needed, just a bit of black tape to make tidy

result 30 foot featherlight pole
I will need to get in touch with alex gardiner re:superlight brush as my favourite vikan hi-low soft bristle brush makes too much bend in pole for my liking.

This pole will only be used for handfull jobs as will take longer to use, but a vast improvent on my 30 ft streamline orange pole these are crap and full to bits in 6 month's; this one has only survived so long cos not used that much.

Alex gardiner: i like the sound of your new hybrid 20 ft pole, i also like the sl-x know someone who has just bought one, went for cheap alternative at present as money's tight.
Keep up  the great products ;)

thanks all
Lee

just read my post.

the new;  top section of my muscle zone is about the width of my little finger and the male joiner piece i made from a crank joint slides down this and sits on outside of pole, like threading a needle ;)
thanks all

I often use just the top three sections of my SLX and if this is the basis for the new pole from Gardiners then it's brilliant. (I have bought a ferrule "rubber foot" for it as well.)

Incidently Alex - if in a couple of years I just want to buy the top two or three sections for my SLX (as they're the ones I mainly use and will be more worn than the biggest two sections) is that something you can email me a price for?

Yes it will be possible to purchase just the sections you want to replace.  We will have these listed on the website in the next couple of months.
