Hi

OK, you have to be extremely careful with pigeon mess.

You will need full PPE, that is chemical suit, full respirator, safety wellies, all cuffs must be secured (use tape) you will need dense rubber gloves, plus another latex pair underneath, you should also plug up your ears.

You will also need Bio hazard refuse sacks as the pigeon guano is a bio hazard and MUST be incinerated.

Pigeon Guano carries around 60 diseases, of which 40 are communicable to humans here are a few:

Cryptococcus:

Health Effects. Clinical manifestations of pulmonary infection are not characteristic and may be absent. The infection may disseminate to the central nervous system, resulting in cryptococcal meningitis (inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord), which is difficult to diagnose and fatal if not properly, and promptly, treated.

Histoplasmosis.

Most infections produce no symptoms or only a mild influenza-like illness. However, pneumonia, blindness, and even death from a chronic infection are possible.

Psittacosis:

Psittacosis is characterized by fever, headaches, and muscle pain, with or without obvious respiratory symptoms. Untreated cases, especially in older patients, can progress to pneumonia and/or generalized toxaemia resulting in death.

Viral diseases:

HerpesVirus

CircoVirus

Avian parvovirus

Avian reovirus

Eastern, western & Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis

Rubivirus

Bacterial Diseases:            Fungal diseases:

Staphylococcus               Candida

Streptococcus                  Microsporum

Myobacteria                  Aspergillus

Listeria                  Trichoderma

Clostridia                  Pigeon Fleas

Salmonella

Enterobacter

Psuedomonas

Aeromonas

Vibrio

Actinobacillius

Haemphilus

Chalmydia

Ricketsia

There are also parasitic diseases (flies and flesh eating maggots)

I would not pressure wash it at all as there will still be residue present and this will splash everywhere.

You will need a bactericide which you will pre-spray and you must leave on for at least 15 mins before work begins.

Hi

Very good chemical to use for a pre-spray is PX Ornikill  ;)  use it to spray over the guano to dampen it and avoid spores becoming airbourne, as Martin has said leave for a round 15 min before starting the cleaning & decontaminating.

Hi Guys,

I dont do this work at all. However I am intersted in finding a bit more info. (Not doing the work yet)

But where would you dispose of the pigeon mess?

Do you require a licence to remove it?

Thanks

Dave

Hi

There are companies who have a license to dispose of Bio hazardous waste.

They can be either so much per bag with a min charge, or a year contract with min charge + bag charge.

Hi Dave,

With the waste management companies we have used in the past, there is only a hand full that will take Pigeon guano ect as there is only a few incineration companies the will deal withit. so phone which ever waste management company and tell them what you want disposing of, and see what requirement they have??
