Title: First day with SLX today...
Post by: davids3511 on April 08, 2009, 08:06:57 pm
and I have beaten my best ever day by about £40.00. Fantastic pole, chuffed with it.

Clamps and the extra sections take a bit of getting used to when you are used to an 18foot predator but I think it's fab.

Get used to taking sections off it when you don't need them. Really lightens the pole. I regularly work with 2, 3 or 4 sections depending on the jobs I'm doing.

You always do more when you get a new toy,it`s a light pole but no matter what you get new pole hot water etc you always do more to start off with it`s the new toy syndrome.

Yeh, need a new base cap first though. The last section feels like nothing when you have it off, but you can really feel the difference when it is on the pole.

Noooo, don't say that. This is the new, dynamic hard working me, here to say (for a while).

So when I switched to wfp and I saw almost double the speed, it was new toy syndrome?

Maybe I'm just reading it wrong.  :D

No - I thought it was new toy syndrome - but I am sustaining the speed over two weeks on from getting my SLX - and I generally work with just 4 sections. If I thought it through I reckon I might get away with 3 at times.

The standard base cap fits the second largest section as well as the base section. If you want a cap for the next section smaller (section 3 on original SL-X and section 4 on the current one) then a base cap for an X-Tel section No.3 fits well if it is heated slightly before the first fitting.

Sorry to be negative here but at the minute my slx is really getting on my verves, ive been looking after it, taking it apart, cleaning all the sections and hose, sprayed with ptfe spray, putting back nicely together, getting clamps just right putting loc tite on and leaving over night to dry etc, but recently it doesnt grip as much, when doing windows above cons any pressure i can feel sections sliding down, I know people slate ionics but i used a mates pole the other day that he uses very regular, its 9 years old and still has plenty of life in it yet so i think the glyder might be next, This isnt a dig at Alex or gardiners as i feel that they put a lot into trying new things and the competitors come along after all the hard work is done and produce a pole similar but i cant do with keep doing the clamps up and spinning sections.

No i havent Alex, how does this work, i take it this consists of sending it back to be serviced, this would be difficult as i dont have a day were i wouldnt need the pole.

I've had no probs but then after two weeks I don't expect to.

Free service? Why haven't I heard of this and what is it?

I do think that for the best part of £500 then it would be good to get more than a small sheet of paper for instructions/maintenance ...

You don't need it.  Keeping your pole clean is the best preventative medicine.  You can use something like a dry PTFE film after cleaning the pole as it will help prevent wear further but it is not necessary.  I personally have never used it and one of my SL-X poles is two years old now.

The free service is not for the pole you have just bought, it is for the previous year old model.  I think you'll find that the SL-X/Super-Lites are the only poles on the market that come with ANY instructions.  When I get the time I might do an illustrated DVD guide to using, maintaining and living with an SL-X...........

Yea it's for the first generation SL-X, the clamp keyhole had to be slightly enlarged on some poles, factory fault I believe, or something along those lines. As was the case with mine. I should get it back soon.

The new ones shouldn't have any problems.

Hope Alex doesn't mind me mentioning that.

Alex, do you mean the base cap on my 30' will fit the last but one section too. I tried today, removed the last section and tried to put the base cap on the second last section and it was too big.

By the way, I beat my best ever day (wednesday) again yesterday, only by £7.00 this time though. It's a combination of the flocked brush, which I trust more to cover the glass so do less strokes, and the lighter pole.

The cap gets heated and stretched slightly to fit the base section, once it has been stretched it will be slightly too big for the next section down. However a new same size cap will fit fine as it has not been stretched.

Not at all. I have to say Tim that your 'returned for servicing SL-X' is the best kept example of a pole I have seen. Do you actually use it?  :)

Is there any particular polish you can reccomend for poles. Most are wax based so unsuitable. Could it be worth your while stocking a polish designed to reduce the friction wear on the pole.

I use a polish designed for fibre glass cars (can be used on all types though), it is not cheap. In thoery it should prolong pole life.

With a carbon pole I would think as well as regular cleaning of hose and pole it would be well worth applying a coat of protective polish regularly too.

I would recommend Dry Film PTFE Spray. We do stock 400ml spray cans.
