I was horrified when this first happened to me, now I offer a leaflet when the I am booking the custy in for a clean, explaining what can occur after a clean and general tips and advice to give the customer peace of mind should this sort of thing arrise.

some carpets have a polyprop backing, they tend to go wavey when wet/damp because polyprop is not elasticated, whereas most carpets are elasticated & therefore absorb moisture without any effect on the lye of the carpet..... it can look quite dramatic, but after a couple of hours the carpet soon settles.. regards charlie :o

Ye once the water is on the carpet even a turbo dryer wont help and just takes 12 hours to go back after the backing relaxes :)
