Through lounge today. wool mix, cream. The room quite cluttered with varying types of chairs, a sofa and a six seater dining table and chairs , every item potentily a wood stain transfer, so transfered the dining chairs into an adjoining room connected by double french doors, neatlly stacked the chairs and cleaned the room making sure every contact area of furniture left had foil underneath, on completing job custy happy and I said whatever you do dont put the chairs back in place untill completly dry, if unsure place some foil underneath.
Argghhh. just had a call from hubby a stain has appeared from just inside the lounge carpet where it meets adjoing room from one of the chairs I left slightly in the room.
now I definitly know every chair was placed in the other room, and some body has moved it slightly back in to get to ann area of the room the chairs where placed in, explaining this to the custy , he says nobody has moved a chair! :'(
Said i would take a look , and try to correct but it was not I that was at fault.
Thoughts Please

Its getting to the point where we say "this conversation is being recorded" so that we can say "this is what I said"
Stick to your guns but help out but point out again what you said - dont move furniture unless foil under legs.
-
its obviously not your fault as theres no way you could of cleaned that bit if the chair was there, but at the same time you can't go calling custys liars if you want repeats, i would try and remove the stain free of charge and if it didn't come out then i'd have to stick up for myself.

Stick to your guns Geoff.
Go and have a look and attempt to remove the stain, but if unsucessful and you know the chair has been moved, why should you take the blame.
You explained to the custy quite clearly the dangers and you placed foils under everything in the room, repeat this fact to the custy when you return.

Was the client a newbie ???
It did run quite quick then ???

I think you should be there NOW to try to remove, if it dries your in the sh#t.
It will be easier to remove now.
Sorry but you wanted our thoughts.

When you do your quote or invoice ensure that you write ''Do not place furniture on carpets until fully dry''. At least if you put foils under furniture and they move the items its there fault.

i agree with you on the point you have raised even to the point of returning as soon as he rang, however nobody could be there because of other commitments, and I am not going out later this evening I have commitments, now the scenario of it been my fault completly no matter what the problem, I would have been there all night to try and sort.
Yes a new custy , but i was a recommendation.

Thats a pity as you may now have a fight on your hands,

Try for consensus Geoff rather than confrontation. Easier said than done, I know but if you try and get them on your side rather than defending yourself vigorously then you may just get them to accept the fait accompli.
You may then just escape by refunding the money and yes I guess you wont be getting any other work or recommendations from them.
I do know how you feel. Been there and rather I didn't have the T shirt. Hopefully it'll all be a bit calmer tomorrow.

Geoff,
Stick to your guns mate, do not offer to go and remove stain free of charge, if you offer to remove stain free of charge then in my book you are admitting liability.
They know it is not you fault and that it is 100% theres.
Dont loose any sleep over it mate, maybe a good idea in future tho to get it wrote on the job sheet and signed for.
good luck Mark

An even better idea ( for the future )
J K has a sticky tape which can be placed under any suspect furniture
-
Robert,
I am aware of the dangers and do use barriers, its the point of furniture been moved into room after the consequenses have been explained.

Geoff,
Had the same a few years ago. Told the custy exactly the same, they rang back and said there was a wood stain in the doorway.
I told them 'do you remeber when I was in the kitchen and said dont move the furniture until its dry' they said 'yes'.
Told them it wasnt me that moved it. Went back a few days later and said I can try and kick it out as it was in the doorway or retuft it but the retuft was the only option but they wouldnt pay. And that is the last I have heard of them or the incident, its probably still there.
Not your prob Geoff.

Well the good news,
i visited this afternoon , hubby apolgetic and told me his wife had moved the chair , not only had she moved the chair she had dragged it from the lounge into the other room causing a fainter stain line all the way into the other room.
Out with redrx , heat tranfer all came out , flushed and everybody happy :)
Husband told me on the quite his wife addmitted it after he had spoke to me yesterday and I had explained it could not of been myself, she apparently was frightened of been in bother with hubby after they had only just had them cleaned.
still i dont want this happening to often 8)

Another of those "Phew!" moments ;D
Ben - "It's not the carpet cleaning that's hard, but the stress that goes with it!"
-
did you charge then, or was it a freebie?
derek
-
Freebie,
only half a mile up the road, and after they admitted I felt it was good custy relationship.

Going off the subject slightly.
Who tells customers to move furniture after removing the foil tabs? Even though the carpet is dry, sweat is still present under the tabs.
If you simply tell customers to remove tabs when carpet is dry and explain nothing else you will be heading for a lot of trouble. These tabs are water proof and water tight under pressure of furniture.
Always tell customers to MOVE the furniture slightly out of place when eventually removing tabs to allow the moisture trapped beneath the tabs to full evaporate before moving back into place.
I explain this to the customer and also get the customer to repeat what I have said to make sure it has sunk in.
The day you get wood stain in a carpet is the day you obtain some spare carpet for your house.

A good point Peter and one I will pass on to my customers with immediate effect!
