Title: Transporter owners
Post by: SonOfFormby on March 17, 2009, 02:43:19 pm
Does the engine size really cause a problem when carrying water, as long as the payload is high enough. Just driven both, 2.5 is nippy but do I really need the extra power, seller was trying to sell me on the no cambelt point, is this a big deal?

Don't go for the 84PS it's just not powerful enough.

The 102PS is torquey enough to pull most loads. I have the 102PS T32 with a 650 litre system and it pulls well enough.

The 130PS is good, but the worst economy. The 175 is great, but not as economical as the 102 and eats through front tyres.

i used to have a old T4 and it was the bog standard 1.9 D engine, it used to carry any load i put in it, though dont expect to get a speeding ticket on the motorway  ;)

That's just what I wanted to know Alex, the 102ps has the 1300kg payload too, is that right? The 1.9 i test drove seemed ok compared to the 2.5, and I'm no boy racer!!

Thanks Alex, I have just about sussed out what all the T30/102PS etc mean and the payloads that apply, so with the 84PS out of the picture, it's either the T30 102PS or the T32 102PS.

Do you travel far with alot of weight Alex, as I am planning on the 650l tank, but only have a couple of days where I cover any distance, rest is just local around my town.

I have the T32 Window Van with the 102PS and the 1303kg payload. For some reason this combination has the highest payload. I have opted for deleted rear-most windows, twin sliding doors, parking sensors and privacy glass in Diamond Metallic Black. When I ordered it I was planning on fitting an 840litre system hence the need for the T32. Since then I have decided to fit a 690 litre system (the 650 litre tank is temporary) which means that I could have made do with the T30, but you never know when you could do with a larger load.

Generally I drive about 50-60 miles a day in it for commercial work. Usually this consists of driving to one area and driving back. The van really doesn't seem to notice the difference between full or half full. It is not speedy, but more than adequate for the weight I carry. It is still in the 'running in' period for the engine so haven't really opened it up yet!

Unfortunately I'll only be getting a used van, but I wouldn't want to go lower than 1202kg PL, and the T28 looks like it might be cutting it a bit fine, but there are plenty of T30's out there luckily.

On a side note, one of the dealers told me next month is a good time to buy, when alot of self employed change vehicle for the new tax year etc, the market becomes a little flooded.....anyone had any experience of this? I suppose actually this is not a good year to predict trends though.

The T30 should be fine for what you want and as you say there do seem to be a lot of T30s around.

Yep good old fashioned timing chain ;) ;D

The timing chain lasts longer, but costs more to fix apparently, so swings and roundabouts I suppose on that point. Picked up a nice 06 T30 104 now anyway.

Cambelt change is about £240ish + VAT, that I know, and was told chain option was about £800, but double the mileage from it, he was selling me a cambelt model though :P ;D
