Title: Stink
Post by: jacko on April 04, 2005, 11:13:56 pm
Called out to one of my regular guest house clients last week to clean a nylon carpet. The rooms long term occupant had apparently spilled horlicks. It stunk like sick (probably sour milk).

I told my client that i would apply deodoriser with the clean (used Prochem Odour Fresh) but warned him that the liquid would probably have penetrated the underlay and floorboards, whereby he would have to lift the carpet, replace the underlay and treat the floorboards. He acknowleded this and told me to clean anyway.

Went and did another job for him today, and he says have a whiff in room 7 - went in and nearly threw up.
Luckily the old lady who resides there has no sense of smell!

The guy asked me what he should do now to rectify the odour....  Apart from replacing the underlay i am not sure how to treat the wood...  Guys, your help and advice will as always be greatly appreciated.

Jacko,

I had a job recently with a national housing developer, they had left the roof off of one block of housing too long, the result was mould growth on all the timbers in the roof space, not a pleasant odour by any stretch of the imagination. However I treated with a mould-killing chemical available from any builders’ merchants and then sealed the timbers with varnish. They paid me, so it must have worked!! You know how these developers love to find any excuse not to settle their accounts!!! Hope this helps pal.

Jacko,
when i moved into my present home the previous owners let there dogs urinate everywhere for years(didnt know when we viewed the place cos they sprayer odour nutraliser everywhere when we came to view) so we did the same as stuart scrubbed the floorboards then 2 layers of varnish to seal them, got rid of the smell, now not a whif

Hi Jacko

I cleaned a carpet about 8 months ago, customer pointed out that kids had spilt milk and that it smelled, especially on warm days.  I advised them the same as you re the underlay etc and they accepted.

Cleaned with prochem detergents (didn't know about m/s at the time) but with Prochems clensan in the tank.

Got a call back about a week later because the smell was still there and applied another, stronger application of clensan (as per the directions) by sprayer to the affected areas.

Went back another week later, as arranged and smell hadn't returned, even on the three hot days during that week.
