Title: Smelly Rug
Post by: dillydi on March 03, 2009, 10:01:12 am
Cleaned a synthetic piled rug with suede inlays using traffic and crystal green. The smell was terrible afterwards.
Applied urine neutraliser on the front and backing trying to stop the smell, and that seemed to stop it, by the way they have two dogs and four small children.
One of our domestic cleaners took it back to the house yesterday and the customer has complained about the smell, its still there, as strong as ever.
Help please

Hi

Is it a urine smell?

Urine normally leaves a stain?

Have the dog been constantly laying on it, defecated it, given birth on it, been sick on it?

A great product I have used is Sta Kill by Stapro (£4.95 for a trigger spray from a janitorial supplier) or maybe Microsan or Solubac. You have to leave these products on to work, to break down the bacteria therefore killing it, a deodorizer can be applied afterwards.

How is it constructed, latex in the foundation? If it is it's probably that rotting away, no amount of cleaning will help. If that's what is causing it.

Sure you have checked but are you sure there is no wool content and its completly dry?
It may be urine contamination that you have re-activated during cleaning tho.

It may be behind that cotton backing is a latex rubber coating that is decaying and that's what is causing the smell.

I'd apply a neutraliser to it and leave it on over night.

These rugs can smell really bad even when new.  The canvas backing and the latex glue give off the smell.  As the face is acrylic its easy to clean.

Did you notice the rug smelling before you cleaned it?

Unless you identify whats causing the smell its hard to give specific advice.  Its also very difficult and potentially damaging to soak these rugs which is really the only way to remove difficult deep odours.

In future always pre-qualify the smell from these rugs before you clean it.

PS. groom out your wand marks.

i am not a carpet cleaner ( i know, wot u doing responding to this post then ::) ), but for pee smells we use a product called re-osan which is used in refuse areas, old folks homes and the like where there is a lot of urine smells to mask.....not saying to use it, just check its suitability :)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you wont get rid of the smell.
Had one of these to deal with a few years back when a lady got in touch when she cleaned her carpets herself, then put one of these rugs ontop of it before it was dry.We tried everything but it didnt work.

Only way would to use a ozone generator, in a sealed room.
