I wanted to do both com and domestic from the start so I picked a company name as apposed to "mick's window cleaning service". IMO anything like that makes you look like a one man band.
My firm is RPG Service for example.Sounds better than Cozy's Windows!
I have a 50/50 mix now of com and domestic, some of the firms I have on my books are Durkopp Adler (large sewing machine company over here) I don't think they would have even looked at my offer with a company name like "Cozy's" if you know what I mean. Image plays a very big role is the point I'm trying to make here. 8)

To me there is four roads you can go down, and a local name can be better sometimes than a large company image that can at times make people think its going to be expensive before they call.
One idea is your surname window cleaning/ surname window cleaners / surname cleaning services etc. Which once you are well established people will natuarly call someone local as supposed to a seamingly nation company.
Two is the national idea, there are loads of choices, an animal related to your profession e.g. spider/ eagle window cleaning (climbing working at heights) or something which gives them some sort of expectation of what it is you do like crystal window cleaning, or clearview window cleaning, you get the idea.
The last is less personal but still promotes that you are a local company, e.g. if you live in dundee, dundee window cleaning/ers. Or if you live on maderia street, maderia window cleaning.
I would suggest using window cleaning in your name at first even if you are thinking about going into other services latter as this will save any confussion as to what it is you do when they see your logo and will aid in accuiring more customers, than the last option which I dont suggest like apex, or accorn cleaning, some random name that has no real link to your business, EG Cleaning Contractors etc.
Have fun with it. If your town is famious for something, an inventor or something, you could incorporate that, but things like animals are also easy when creating logo sets, and cool icons.

nearly every manager in large companies is to get their act together for environment towards the planet.Every government around the world is to get their act together, our government is to spend a fortune in giving people grants to save heating with loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solar panels,
your house is going to start getting a green count in the next few years, even trying to sell your house, the new paerwork is going to take into consideration how green your house is.The bin men now have to empty about 3 bins instead of one,the local dumping yard has seperated everything into seperate containers for recycling and you tell me no one cares,
i must be missing something

Are you suggesting that people will be worried about how green their window cleaner is next?
If you state you are environmentally friendly I think you will gain some kudos for this, but most businesses will look at the bottom line, and assume that environmentally friendly equals a little more expensive, which it does in everything else...

Regarding the "Green" issue,... most customers aren't bothered yet,.. but the few that are you will surely win. Those that aren't won't be put off by it,.. so its win win from a marketing point of view. Larger commercial contracts are increasingly often eco-aware. I did one last week where we were told during the health and safety induction that the companies environmental policy (Big American company) was a major reason we got the job. Chemical free cleaning and rainwater harvesting did bring in that job!
-
As for all these "green ideals" I find it a bit hypocritical as we spew out thousands of litres of water from WFPoles every day.
How is that ethical or enviromentally friendly?
Thank god we live in a rain sodden land.
Enviromentally friendly window cleaning or advertising it as such is complete nonsense.
These big firms just play the game to present a caring image, cos they think its cool. It's an industry within itself, and What a load of old Botox it all is.
>:(

Thats where rainwater harvesting comes into its own!!

2.7% of the worlds freshwater reserves are continually being used and recycled, through the evaporation process and water recycling. We can only use less than 3% of the worlds reserves of fresh water because the rest is frozen.
97.3% of the rest of the freshwater is locked into the icecaps and glacial activity. If we spray water back into the system it will eventually come full circle anyway.
Knowing that we are putting our water back into the eco system through the waste water or from the evaporation process is definately not without environmental impact but I doubt very much that it could be construed as a negative point.

Its the energy cost of collecting/pumping/treating tap water that is the big issue. Still,.. it hurts the environment more to eat meat than almost anything else, and I'm not about to give up steak! :)

Hi Trippy
