I was asked to clean some "Floatex" flooring for a young couple today. I quote £70 and they asked me to proceed with the job. Then from nowhere their landlady turns up, "You're not cleaning with water are you?"
"Well, yes I am, why?"
She starts "Well you shouldn't clean carpets, it's like cleaning clothes and it ruins them. The last fella that cleaned that "Floatex" left them wet for days and it smelled and ruined the "Floatex" and made them ripple. And you're far too expensive, the last man only charged £35 so I suggest you readjust your prices. I don't mind speaking my mind to your type, ask anyone around here!"
By this time I was boiling over and replied "So you don't clean your clothes and you obviously don't have your carpets done, is that hygenic? Tell me, when you go to the shops do you buy the cheapest produce or do you believe in 'You get what you pay for?' The reason the last idiot flooded your carpets was because he was cheap, you want a proper job done and you have to pay, now if you don't mind, your tenants have instructed me to clean their carpets.... Oh, and by the way madam, I don't mind speaking my mind either to your "Type", now go away and mind your own business.... (At this time I didn't realise she was the landlady....) But she went off anyway chuntering.....
And, the tenants tipped me a fiver! ;D ;D ;D

Anyone who has been in customer service businesses will get to know the varied make-up of the population. People can be great to be in the company of .. welcoming .. sympathetic .. friendly .. and occasionally awful !
When you make yourself available to provide a service you have to be internally hardened to the less-than-admirable types. It can be laugh though.
Well tackled Colin

Yeah but Pete, I really just wanted to tell her to Feck Off! And I also wanted her to do what ABILITY seems to suggest. But hey ho, what lies for next week... I feckin love this job!

Excellent. ; Well done after all its her tenants that paid you therefore the contract is with them and nothing to do with the old bat ;D 8)

personally, i would of explained why the last guy soaked the carpets and made a mess, and thats why you need to pay proper prices for a proper job.
i'd of been polite and professional to her. i wasn't there so i'm not sure how up her self she really was, but i can usually turn people round, and if i couldn't then yes, i'd of given her what for and what five.
i cleaned a carpet for a landlady a couple of months back. she has added me to the contract agreement for tennants. when they have the carpets cleaned, they have to use me and no one else. so its worth getting on the landladies side as well as the tennant.

I'm sure that you would not stand there taking rude and at times abusive comments without wanting to give her a good talking down Derek.
I'm a very patient and fair person and do give people a good crack of the whip if they are feeling that us carpet cleaners are trying to rip them off in some way. But when I start feeling that it's getting personal and threatening, I don't back down.
I offer a good service and take my time to do the job properly, I would not want to give this woman 5 more minutes of my time for any amount of money. Sometimes (although very rarely) pride outweighs money Derek!

not knockin ya colin, and like i said in my post, if she was too bad then i would of done the same,
i was just pointing out that just cos she wasn't the paying customer, doesn't mean she should be dismissed. all though in this case i think you probably did the right thing.
