I would appreciate your advice.
 I was lucky enough to get a job in a mental health unit where the entrance from the kitchen to the dinining room looked like  a layer of bitumised tar. The night before I was due to clean I sprayed it with an enzyme and covered with a towel.
The followng day I used steam and a power brush, then reapplied another dose of enzyme before finishing off to dry.
It came up well BUT am I running the risk of bringing up colour from the backing or other muck by leaving it so long.
Whilst they were pleased I do want to get it 100% right as this and hopefully other units will be the source of repeat business.

Eddie,

There is no need for such drastic measures, a good conventional non enzyme pre-spray or MS and agitation will clean black top with no problems at all. If you are looking to clean safe then Micro Splitters are the ideal solution.

On a previous job I had been using fineline onestep as a prespray on a greasy pile surface and did not think to use the trial 'solutions' microsplitting kit that I had just purchased.
(I have just used the onestep (with the higher alkalinilty) on a dirt surface and got good results. It was I admit an overkill on my part. This was the fist time I had met 'black top'

Hi Eddie,

I've used Solutions Number 2 heavy duty, along with the rotary and stiff brush to clean black top a number of times, the results have been great so I cant recomend this product enought for the really grubby jobs :)

Hi Eddie,

Next time you come across black top.
Try using One Step carpet and upholstery cleaner HOT as pre-spray,agitate and HOT water rinse.

Lower risk of damage and only one visit required.

Bit ott on dwell time never put down and leave unless it says you can! Your HS need looking at but wont dwell on this!

HOT pre-spray? Always found with any hot pre-spay buy the time it hits the floor luke warm if that! apart from that’s the way to go!

Black top is not such a problem as it may seem.
Any good degreasing prespray followed by a normal hot rinse (I prefer a detergent in these cases) will do the job.

Thanks for your posts.
Info useful particularly about hot pre-spray and dwell time.

Len,
 I have had some good training but am just short in cleaning experience. In my defence the food grease layer was not just a layer on top of a heavy wilton but had gone through the pile to a depth of about 3/8ths of an inch in a small area of 24'' x 24''.
I know you are are right on the dwell time and as I suggested I was going for overkill.
