Title: Tennis elbow
Post by: ftp on February 09, 2009, 07:33:37 pm
This seems to be a common complaint with this job so i was wondering if anyone has tried a simple brace or strap - do they work?
I was talking to my physio this morning and she suggested getting one but some look nothing more than a velcro strap. The pain is out of my elbow and down the forearm now.  ???

I had tennis elbow and had to have the injection which lasted 2 month
The tennis elbow has now come back and i use a strap and i do find it helps a little
but my elbow hurts more when it hasnt been used (ie first thing in morning)
I have also been told to take anti inflamitory medicines such as ibuprofen which does help and i can reccommend the VOLTAROL PAIN-EZE creme its pricy for the amount you get but it does ease the pain a little.

if there are any witch-doctors with a cure id be interested to find out as long as i dont have to have that kniting needle size needle jammed in my elbow joint again   ;D

I had it a while ago and the pain was awful, even at night I'd keep waking up in agony and obviously lack of sleep made things worse.
Went to docs and he told me it lasted 9 months and would go (never heard that before or since) , I'd suffered it about 6 months then so started taking anti-inflamitary tablets to ease things and after 9 months strange as it seems, it totally cleared up and hasn't come back.....yet.

i had two sessions of acupuncture... £25 each...ten years ago...

it vanished in two days.... and i had it bad ...sometimes i would be given a cup of tea , and drop it all over the floor as the pain whilst lifting the cup , sometimes was unbearable.

now i have a sore right shoulder with my arm going in and out, and up and down all day. ???

cant win.

ps. i was in sales ten years ago...so nothing caused it.

I used to get it when I used the backflip, I did find that the elasticated support eased it.
Had no problem since switching to WFP.

Using the poles has strained both my forarms so I have been almost 12 months getting over it. Also agravated old squash injury to my elbow, oh and my backs dodgy too!

I had 'tennis elbow' for a couple of months and I read somewhere that it can take from 6-9 months to completely heal.
It was so painful I mentioned it when I went for my MOT with my osteopath. 'No problem' he said, 'We'll treat that with acupuncture.'
Within a week I noticed a significant improvement, and within a month it had cleared up.
Whether it was the acupuncture that begun the healing process I don't know but I can't dismiss it.
I still get a little elbow ache and muscle pain in the forearms but it clears fairly quickly after I finish work for the week.

When I started WFP I got a lot of pain in my right wrist.  I bought a velcro wrist support (just a thermal wrap to put round it secured with a bit of velcro)  It worked fine.  After a couple of weeks I didn't need it any more.

Two weeks then back to work but took it steady, gradualy bult up full strenth withing six weeks.
They now do the opp key hole so recovery may be shorter, left a nice 4 inch scar but it was worth it.
If you want to now more about tennis elbow look in google type tennis elbow opps or just tennis elbow

that was a good topic to look back on jeff, i have been wfp long time now and i have some of my deep neck tissues have been damaged, with on going muscle spasms, and early signs arthritis

sleeping is difficult, finding right position,  working is painful confined myself to domestic now, thankful i have two staff.

tried the anti inflammatory for a year not much relief.

best thing i was advised to try is acupuncture, every three weeks now and have taken up palates thought it was a bit girly at first but brings great relief and helps to inculcate better posture which works trys to undo

but i was surprised how in sports or in work- we continually  stress muscles one sided with out being in  balance with our spines. i think when were young we dont pay much attention just bash it out

learning to simply De-stress the muscles before and after work is useful habit to get into. also seeking help to get better posture whilst working was good advice foe me  as its surprising how quickly our bodies can be reeducated, and how we can be reeducated to listen to them as well .

most of the problems we suffer with, either  tennis elbow and the sciatica and neck problems all emanate from the same area of the back dependant on our own  inherit strengths and weaknesses and window cleaning puts great stress on these areas either traditional or wfp

I have big probs here. Last August I got a cortosone injection in my left elbow. It was a toss up if it was to left or right. Cortosone sorted my left and the right got better too. About a month ago the left started to go again and got much worse, including stiffness on the outside of the joint. Another injection = no change. I have now changed from right handed pole work to left handed to see If this will help. Too early to say.  I was surprised by the guy who had an op (was it Ladder no more?). Tennis elbow is inflammation of the tendons. How do you op? I am also doing more trad, both left and right handed, to try to reduce the repetitive nature of my work. (wagtail flipper is the biz)

The worst thing for it i've found is cleaning conservatory roofs - i think it's the extra pressure and repetetive action that does it.
I can be cleaning fine for hours then a slight change in the angle of my wrist or arm and i get an incredible shooting pain in the forearm. Once it's there it goes on for weeks. I cant straighten my elbow these days.
Ruined my sex life - i'm going to have to sleep with the wife instead.  ::)

Yep, same here. got tennis elbow in october, never had it before, caused by pole work. Had my first session at physio last week & it's been a lot worse since ???

It's a nightmare but I have found if you relax your right (for right handed people) hand more & don't grip the pole as tight it helps while working. As someone else mentioned, the worst thing is picking a mug of coffee up!!! I cant go left handed either as I have no left front or rear deltiods- snapped nerve & they wasted away. I do however, still have my good looks. ;)

When they opperated they moved the tendon off the bone so that it is not rubbing causeing pain I was in agony for 2 years but as i said after 6 injections and a lot of antinflamatery tablets there was only the opp left but you have to ask the Doc about an opperation

Type in Google Tennis elbow opperation and all will be explaned

I've fortunately had no such problems yet,.. and I hope to avoid them.
In your opinions as sufferers of these conditions, what are the major causes, and what are the best ways of avoiding it?

Is it simply from using heavy poles and repetitive motions?

Could using lightweight poles and switching arms for each job help?

In my experance of this problem not rearly, its not just window cleaning that causes the problem, doing diy at home eg useing hammers, screwdrivers, Etc if your going to get it its just one of those things.
Any sport eg Darts, Snooker, Cricket ,etc and the most common Tennis lol.

A £4 bottle lasts you quite some time, it tastes like really cheap vino, rinse your mouth afterwards or your teeth will start to decay as the vinegar reacts with the Calcium.
Course I have tried it I dont reccomend anything much including wfp unless I have used it for 6 weeks or so.
I dont need it three times a day, its only a spoonful with water and swallow in one go. if you like vinegar on your chips you will be ok.Remeber the name honey and vinegar or "honeygar" try it for 2 weeks and see.
