Sounds like the emission/oxygen sensors, if these have gone your vehicle will drink fuel.

Which engine does the Mondeo have in it & what is the age.? Many years ago i had a 2.0GLS Mondeo Estate that was also thirsty. I had the Lamber sensor changes & this made a slight improvment to the MPG. Give the car a good service. Change the fuel/oil/air filter, change oil, change spark plugs. Check your tyre pressures. Use 5-30 semi synthetic grade oil. The Bosch type plugs appear to run better in Fords.

It a 2002 1.8 LS with bout 70k on the clock, i havent a bad word to say about the car and would defo consider one of the newer ones when changing....Yeah this weekend will change all on it.....one thing i havent a clue about is the diggerent grades of engine oil, i normally just get 15-40 coz thats what ive used in all my vehicles, is the 5-30 a thicker oil or could someone explain what the grade means...cheers

Hi,
The oil you should be using in the Ford Mondeo is 5-30. Its thinner than 15-40 grade. If the vehicle had done over 100k then i would say use 10-40 or 15-40 as these oils are thicker. Phone round a few car spares shops & see if any sell 5-30 semi synthetic Lucas oil. It costs between £15 - £19 for 5 litres. Go onto ebay & type in Item number: 270312386383 or type in 5-30 lucas oil. You will see what the container looks like. In the advert it tells u the benefits of this oil plus this oil will last 50% longer than most other oils meaning less oil changes. Ive used this oil for a while now \7 have noticed a difference. The engines runs smoother & quieter.
If your looking at buying a newer Mondeo id say go for the Turbo Diesel version. Great reliable smooth engines with plenty of torque especially the ones with higher BHP plus they r good on MPG. Fords 1.8 petol engines have always been known for heavy fuel use.
