Title: Typical, my motor's blown!!!!
Post by: daysdeepclean on January 28, 2009, 12:17:51 pm
I'm making the most of the nice weather by cleaning a custy's rug on my drive, then the machine comes to an abrupt stop.... One of the motor's has blown and it's only done about 50 hours. :( :( :(

On the bright side, it happened at home and my back up machine was 10ft away in the garage. It's an Exel, does anyone have any idea's as to what it could be? I'm not buying motors every 50 hours >:( >:( >:(

Roll on the day I pick a TM up!

Are you sure it's knackered Colin, they don't normally just stop suddenly, could be some thing simple.

There was a burning smell, I'm gonna see if it's the "Brushes"??? Is that the right terminology?

Hi Guys

Colin, when I had my Excel I went through lots of vac motors and tried everything from running the vac motor for 2 minutes on completion of job to bringing machine indoors every night.

Nothing seemed to make any difference.

My accountant even picked up on it.

I believe it is just something to do with Excel's design.

When I went to aAlkltec vac motors lasted over 3 years !!

Cheers

Doug

One of my ninjas has a date stamp of 2003 on the motors!

I'd be well hacked off with 50 hours out of one!

Sparks definitely suggest brushes are gone

Easy to renew Colin and a lot less than a new one

Exel motors are massive, I thought alltec's motors were smaller. Forgive me if I'm wrong!

I think the Exacta are 7.5" as opposed to 5.7" as the "norm".

That rings a bell Joe, the guy I bought it from had me a spare motor sent and it was the smaller one.... I wonder if there's a way of fitting the smaller, more reliable motors ???

Although the 7.2" vacs wear brushes much quicker than a 5.7", 50 hours is far too little for the brushes to have failed. On my Alltec Pro Plus with the same vac motors the brushes would last about 300 hours.

I presume that the failure is on the new motor Colin, and not the other?

Is the motor still under warranty? Was it a genuine Lamb Amtech motor and not a pattern?

Safe and happy cleaning :)
Ken

Are you sure they were brand new and not just refurbed. Check your invoice.

In my experience of using porty's for 23 years, the motors did last much longer if the brushes were replaced when they were up to half worn. If the motor blew the brushes, this was due to there being hardly any of the actual carbon brush left and once this happened the armateur was also damaged, so just replacing the brushes at this stage was a waste of time, as they just rapidly burnt in a mass of sparks.
Dave.

My motors arrived and my back up machine is now working perfectly. John at "Extracta" was very helpfull and the motors were indeed under warranty...
