Now I'm just bringing myself to doing an inhome audit, after years of phone quoting I'm wanting to change my ways and this also means changing the way I sell, anyone want to take me out on a few quotes so I can pick up some much needed tips?

Unfortunately it is bad there I don't do much work there at all, people who do book my services very often cancel with a day to go, last week I had a decent job there are she cancelled at 4pm the day before but you half expect it.

For 1/2 room jobs and 3 piece why bother losing an hour of your time, fuel and wear and tear on your car.
Most people on here stated that they had a set price for 3 piece suites anyway.
Sweet talk them into more work on the phone or when you get there.

A set price for upholstery would be bonkers, in the early days I got caught out a few times with the huge difference in suites.
Anyway...............if you go out to look at a job and impress the prospect, it's highly probable there will be at least one carpet needing attention.
The thing is, you must impress them...................NOT by overselling, or overstating the obvious, but by being the kind of person they will be happy to deal with.
Some just can't do this and would be better getting another to do it for them, or stick to telephone quotes. Some people are useless at presentation, but brilliant at the hands on. They will gain long term clients and get referrals, but...................they need to ask for them.
A way of doing this, is a follow up questionaire.............just a few simple questions
did our representative arive at the tme arranged
were they clean and tidy
were they careful and considerate
did the work meet or exceed your expectations
would you be happy to recommend our company
This is how many businesses build a list of testimonials

Always been there Derek, just have to defend the lesser mortals occassionally and that sometimes gets misinterpreted, or misunderstood.

For my business, there's no set rule for whether or not I do an in-home audit prior to the clean.
My rules of thumb are, if it's a repeat, then there's probably no need, you'll have enough info on your database. If it's a personal recommend and just a small room, you can estimate over the phone and if that is in the ballpark for the customer confirm as a no obligation quotation when you arrive to do the work. Theoretically you may be turned away, but it's never happened to me yet.
Try and schedule the quote/audit when you're working the area, saves time and expense.
If you are working and quoting, you may wish to consider your presentation. Your avatar Shaun, is acceptable for working and quoting, but some techs will work in jeans or coveralls, so will need to think about this aspect.
I will wear indoor shoes for working, but overshoes for quoting (more visible/obvious if the decision maker is not the one to greet you at the door).
I quote all significant sized domestics and all commercials.
I include a 5% premium for carpet quotations, upholstery as required.

Jim Neal I would like to take you up on your offer as I like the way you 'play' with price shoppers and I think that would put me where I want to start.

it will always depend on who your target market clients are. If its carpeted the whole house from Carpetright for £150.00, then they may not be so worried about the clean but are geared to cost. If you have a prospective client who has spent £5000-£15,00 on carpeting its another thing entirely. They may want answers as to what you are going to do, how long wil it be to dry, what is your experience etc, so it is essential to Audit
It really applies an awful lot to what Ken says in how you conduct yourself in the Audit.
