i knock as normally i don't see them until i've rang the bell

i normally find they don't really mind as its a service people normally use. its not like were pushing a hard sell and selling them some crap out of a suitcase

I wouldn't; we get plauged round this area with people trying to sell double glazing, patio cleaning, roof cleaning, scrap metal blokes, blokes who sell cleaning products from impoverished backgrounds, conservatories and probably other stuff...

Don't knock if there's a sign.

I remember one place I used to live where nearly every house had them signs, Telford.

Nearly thought about going into business with them signs ;D

Personally would now not knock due to trading standards no calling zones. If they want you they will phone you.

no calling zones have no legal standing at the moment, but i wouldn't knock. I would put a flyer through, so they still have the option of getting back to you

My tatic is simple:  I knock.  Then I stand there till someone opens the door.  Before they get a chance to say anything, I say:"I'm sorry!  I knocked before I noticed your sign.  I do apologise!"  Then I turn as though I'm about to walk away.

Curiousity gets the better of them.  The usual response is: "Oh, that's alright.  What was it about?" ;)

I think if we never knocked them doors we would have to miss out half of the estates. besides if all the wc thought the same and never knocked on them think how much business you get if your the only one that knocks on them! ;D ;D

Have to agree here. It seems that 1 in 5 houses have those signs nationwide. My answer would be I'm not selling any of the things mentioned on your sign. Although if the word window cleaner was on there. I may then have second thoughts.

The signs don't apply to you, because you are NOT SELLING anything, you are offering a service.

Sorry but yes you are selling as there is money involved you are selling your services as a window cleaner, unless you are daft and do it for free  ;D  ;)

Don't knock if there's a sign.

That's the view I take too Tosh.
I reckon the sign is there for a reason.
I do put a leaflet through unless there's a sign saying not to.

I reacon that over 95% of my customers have these type of signs, yet they still "brought" from me. Why? because I am offering them a simple service, also the majority have been looking for a relible window cleaner for ages, yet they cannot find one.

Some good points mentioned here but for me personaly as I said before I would knock every house regardless of what sign they had in their window. Every house is a potential custumer in my opinion. ;D
