Do any of you guys have any knowledge of Roots blowers.
I have a Spitfire 4.0 with a 45 Blower. It doesn't have a Hm coupler. I replaced it with a jaw coupler. Not sure that was a good idea because it has been eating the elements lately. I put a replacement in less that 50 hours ago and already it is ready for a new one.
I had a good look at the blower earlier and it apears to have some slack in the shafts. Both end float and very slight lateral movement. Also when turning the blower by hand, although it turns freely a slight sound can be heard from the gear end.
The machine runs fine. I can't hear any noise when being driven by the engine except a slight noise that apears to be coming from the coupler but I am sure that will stop when I replace the element.
I am hoping that the coupler problem can be solved by either putting a oversized one or an original Hm. But is my Blower shot?
I need to see John at Hm at some point so I think I may ask for a little guidence while I'm down there.
If any of you guys know about blowers, your thoughts on the play in the shafts and the sound when turning by hand would be appretiated.

it is most important to make sure that the allignment is spot on , any play and the vibration will soon shatter the rubber, a good idea is indeed to get an larger one than you need. take a look at fenners couplings, I believe if you have the figures output/revs ect you will source what you want.
roots blowers...... m. H alliday should be able to answer you their,

As with any component the shafts and gears will wear down over time. They have a hard life It is important to follow the servicing schedule and have you been greasing the shafts.
Saying that they are robust but if it is over 4 years old it may need re-conditioning. Rootes have a place in Huddersfield which will do it.
As Geoff says may be a coupling problem so I would try that first, cheaper.

Hi Nevil,
If the worst comes and you require another blower let me know. I have a spare Roots 45 vac blower that came off a Crossfire 4.4 that may be looking for a new home ;D
