Title: Yellow pages dead in 6 years
Post by: Karl Wildey on March 16, 2005, 04:04:15 pm
Just had salesman on phone trying to sell me web site, domain name etc...
He said that in 6 years everyone will buy on-line and the yellow pages will be dead, That will be nice for us all, save a fortune in yellow page ads.

or was it just salesman b/s. I think so.

Just had salesman on phone trying to sell me web site, domain name etc...

I've had about three of them phone me up offering me websites with "virtually no cost". One even told me that they had funding from the EU so that it would cost me virtually nothing. When I pressed him on what government body or enterprise agency he was affiliated to in order to get this business enterprise funding, the line started to go a bit funny (only at his end) and he just said he'd e-mail me details. Got home, received the e-mail and suddenly there was no mention of this EU grant in writing, and it just looked like the other standard website creation e-mails I've received, but with one difference. No address, no company name and a single 0800 number to contact them on. They did give links to other websites they created, and I wasn't impressed with them. They look OK, but they all look identical in layout. Just shows how much you can make with just one cheap copy of an off the shelf internet design package.

He said that in 6 years everyone will buy on-line and the yellow pages will be dead, That will be nice for us all, save a fortune in yellow page ads.

No, it's absolutely true. Yellow Pages will be dead and buried.....and it will then cost you four grand for an enhanced ad on Yell.com.  ;D

Karl

I think he is probably right!!

There is currently a big movement towards websites, via yel.com ect!!!

I do a lot of networking and the more i speak to people the more i am told that they get more work from the net, than they do from mainstreem advertising!!!
It has certainly worked better for me.

Well I just hope YP survives over the next year, as I've just booked in for about four grand worth of advertising starting from August.

Yell.com is a lot cheaper, and has the advantage of being instantaneous, i.e. the ad appears almost as soon as you've booked (and paid for) it. My enhanced Yell.com listing went live just over a week ago, and I've already had three jobs from it, so I'm certainly impressed so far.

As for those website letters, I think you'll find they're in some way connected to the register at Companies House, and are sent out automatically as your incorporation appears on the register. I had a couple of those, plus a load more junk mail stuff sent to me within two weeks of incorporation. One of those website letters is from a company around the Liverpool area, isn't it?

When I get the daily call from some sales rep trying to sell me advertising I just put the phone down and let him / her carry on talking whilst I carry on working. In the end they realise I am not listening and go off to pester somebody else.
As far as Yell.com I am in the S.East and have had b***er all from my add in the last year.

Interesting response Steve, as I sure I have read this on other post.
So can someone set a poll up, where you get to vote. If those with web pages or yell.com pages, could vote on how many jobs they get a year, or whether what they pay they get back, make a profit or lose big time.
The future is in the web we all know, but your housewife likes to chat on the phone and book the appointment not type on a computer.
