Title: New pump - wiring?
Post by: WISEOWL on January 12, 2009, 12:45:33 pm
Okay, despite considering buying a new diaphragm I have decided to buy a new pump so that I have the gaurantee and the peace of mind knowing I have had it from new (The other was second hand.) I will keep the other for parts.

I use a Varistream Digital however upon searching some threads on here I have noticed that my pump may be wired up wrong? I have two red wires going into the pressure switch from the pump.

Am I right on thinking that all you need is the positive and negative going into the Varistream and then again into the pump? Why have I and others had our pumps fitted the other way and why has it always worked for us?

I will wire up the new pump the new way as I trust the general vibe that goes on in here.

Yup, you must disconnect the pressure switch when using a Varistream.

Thanks.

 :)

Any reason why it is so wide-spread that people don't? To be fair it seems like rather being a one off or a 'cowboy' method it is more an alternative.

Will re-connect properly when it arrives tomorrow!

Varistream instructions say to disconnect it - i'll have a rummage in a minute.

Cheers ftp.

I've just had a look myself at the paperwork that came with the system and yes it does say a simple power to Varistream and then to pump.

Is it also required to have the pump upside down? A few of people pictures show this.

From Williamson pumps:

IMPORTANT If you are fitting the controller to a new or existing SHURFLOW switch pump it is necessary to remove the wires that run from the pump motor to the pump pressure switch. Take the two wires that exit the pump motor and join those red to red& black to black to the two long wires that come from the controller. The pump pressure switch should be left in place but is no longer wired in ....................

The varistream takes over the job of the pressure switch, stopping the pump once the pressure has built up.  If the pressure switch is wired in the there is more to go wrong, ie if the switch sticks for some reason in the off position, your pump won't work.

The reason why some wire them with the pressure switch in, is that some controllers use the pressure switch to stop the pump when pressure is built up and all the controller does is throttle back the pump.  I've completely removed the pressure switches of mine and they work well no probs.

Pump should be mounted with the inlet/outlet at the bottom then if it leaks at all it won't pour water over the electrical parts and wiring.

Cheers fellas!

Will need to do a bit of snipping with the wires then but looks a simply set-up.

Hope so - want to get into the swing of things properly after the New Year!
