What does the average window cleaner (sole trader) pay in tax per year ?
I seem to get hammered, but do the return myself.
-
there is no real average , it all depends on prices , area of country you are in , how much work you do each day , how many days you work , what your expenses are etc.
-
If you are trad then you will pay more tax because you have less outgoings.
Are you claiming for everything for instance Gas - Electric -Council Tax and so on?
-
How do you claim for council tax ???

If you have a room in your house that you use as an office then you can claim a persentage of you gas - electric and councill tax.
So for instance you live in a 2 bedroom house and you use 1 bedroom as an office, then you can claim 33% off your elecrtic-gas and council tax.
You cannot store any type of bedroom furniture in the room either In case they check.
If you don't have a seperate room then you can charge between £3 and £5 per week off your tax bill.

If you are using a room in your home as an office then you can claim against this cost, telephone you local tax offivce and they will be able to help, if they don't know contact you tax office who you file your accounts to they will be of assistance.
The inland revenue hold courses on tax issues, it's well worth the cost, £0.00, you get all the things you need to know, but an accountant is worth the money you have to pay him.

How much do you pay? :)
Get an accountant.
The saying about spending money to make money springs to mind. An accountant will save at least their fee and some.

OK mate thanks very much for your help.
What is a reasonable fee for an accountant to charge. I would not just throw him/her a bag of receits but would present a reasonable accont of my income / expenditure.
thanks again
