Title: Total freeze-up!
Post by: Sir Squeaky on January 04, 2009, 02:21:25 pm
Just looked in the van and it's totally solid right through the entire system.
Guess that's what happens after 5 days, rather than it being thawed each day. :-\

Even the half full tank (about 200-250 litres) is frozen! :o
Squeegee and washer are solid in the bucket.
Brush is attached to the drip tray it's in.

Better try thaw it today, otherwise I've got no chance in the morning!  :-\

My advice of you've been off for a bit...have a look now before it's too late!

Trying to defrost a 200-250 litre ice cube in a van isn't going to be easy.

Can you boil some kettle fulls of pure water and pour them into the tank?

I think the kettle might push up the tds, try filling up though your di bottle with hot water from the tap

I think the kettle might push up the tds,

I'm pretty sure this doesn't happen.  Ian Giles did an experiment with an electrical element some time ago and it didn't effect the TDS.

Of course you could get a few limescale particles in the water, but if you rinse the kettle first, the few you may get in your pure water would probably be negligible.

In my opinion only.

I'm lucky enough that I can trail an extension cable out to the van and leave batteries and so on charging overnight, also able to but in a fan heater with A frost stat setting, so the equipment and water in the back doesn't freeze up.

And when the water freezes on pavements and so on, before starting I sprinkle some road salt very sparsely around where I am going to work, you don't need great clumps of the stuff strewn around, it works fine...mind you, saw Squeaky in town the other day and he was trying to do is best to make himself slip over on the gravel!

But even when you can counter the water freezing on the ground, it's countering the water freezing in the nozzles or jets and then on the pole itself or the bristles of the brush!!!!

So I am now considering getting some of that...er...whats it called? Ethenol?? The pure commercial alcohol stuff that is often talked about on here.

But where to get it from??

And does anyone use it?

Is it effective?

Does it stop water freezing on the ground?

Need to do something I think because if the currently weather trend continues I need to find a way to continue working without having to go back to ladders!!

Going to have to plan for a hot water system methinks, but still have to counter water freezing on the ground....

I worked the other week and the water froze solid on the pole, while I was working, it was a bugger to close.

This freeze up has taught me some good lessons...I have just moved and my set-up at the old house was fine but since moving I did not pay that much attention to it all, have been lucky that I have not been 'froze' mainly due to being able to run electric to van and shed to keep things moving.  But is has been things like insulation, they way the hoses run (being able to drain them out) etc.

Will not get caught out again!!!

Cheers
Dave

I just gone to the van, and me thinking, oh here in the south it's not going to be that bad. This morning it almost hit -10.

Looked in the van, and yup. Solid block of ice, half a tank. I'm getting an electrical heater tomorrow. Not good.

If the winters keep being as cold as this then we'll all have hot "frost stat controlled" wfp systems before long.  ;D

Mines working great  ;D

Varitech have incorporated it with a new box of tricks though - does loads of stuff. Good bit of kit.

I have a fan heater and things are not frozen. But went to do work the other side of Ross on Wye, when you got off the main road on to the country lanes it was just ice and the van was all over the place.

So its not worth the risk there allways tommorow.

At last, no truer a spoken word "it's not worth the risk" take the time to get other aspects of your business up together.  :)

It was nice round Chepstow today, only four jobs done, but two of these were fairly big by my standards and the car temp gauge gave a high of 7.5 Celcius.

So no problems.

I've now taken backpack, hose, brush and five three-quarter filled barrels into the house and stuck them in a cupboard; so hopefully we'll be able to get some work done tomorrow.

I won't!
Not only will -4 or -5c freeze everything tonight, but I can't get water anyway. :(

Not supposed to get above freezing tomorrow, so it may freeze while you're out.
Happened to me last week.
I thawed it out, and while I did a few bungalows by hand it froze again!

I have a 650 ltr ice cibe in my van.
I think it will take all week to defrost it if temperatures get high enough.
At least my trusty old ladders will be ok when the snow goes.

i took the plunge today and bought myself 20 liters of isopropanol and work was top notch today .
this stuff is meant to stop fuel lines freezing so fingers crossed for my hose reel and tank and pump tomorrow. its also meant to aid in evaporation... it does froth up a bit but went back quick check and all was sparkling well pleased although it can be a bit pricey ::)
