Title: Do you enjoy your job?
Post by: Dean Taberner on January 04, 2009, 12:10:44 pm
Considering most people who I speak to these days(non WCing) hate their job, do you enjoy yours?

I can honestly say that a really enjoy mine,

Everyday/week/month is a new challenge,

I had a pretty bad year business wise last year with people ripping me off but im really looking forward to this year. Sad or what?

Dean.

Do i enjoy it? Good question. Just going into my third year now and when scheduling my work i can't get very excited although once i'm out and cleaning things improve. I enjoy gutter cleans because it's somewhere new for a change. Anything repetitive does my head in, including locations. Once the sun pops out again in the spring then i'll start to love it again.

Some days I do enjoy my job, few and far between in winter, but what I do enjoy about my job is the freedom it gives me.

If any other job gave you the freedom it would e palatable in the same way.

I am looking for another job though, but until an opening for International Playboy or Lottery Millionaire comes up I will stick at this.

It's not window cleaning itself that I enjoy, it's being able to call all the shots, not feeling exploited, feeling secure jobwise, and being able to earn a hell of a lot more than I did in engineering.
Window cleaning? It's OK, but I just love working for myself.

Going into 22nd year wc and 3rd year wfp. I do enjoy the new challenges that wfp throws at me. I don't miss using ladders especially this time of year when its freezing. Thing I enjoy most is taking new customers on and doing one off jobs like gutters, insides, etc.

I'm just at my seven-year-point, and I've got to admit I don't love it; and at least once-a-year I think it's a ruddy awful job, normally when the weather is bad for prolonged periods and my cash-flow is slow.

But at other times I think it's the best job in the World.  Each year seems to bring on an inprovement in our quality of work and a noticiable increase in income without working long hours or too hard.

The good points are we don't have to work more than five-or-six hours per day, more than three-or-four-days-per-week; but we do do more if we want to.

I guess that's the beauty of being a self-employed window cleaner; you can set your own targets and do as much or as little as you want to, within reason.

Started in Oct 06 and I am starting to find the actual work boring..lets face it..it's the same thing over and over again...But I do love not having to work silly hours for some jumped up twit who is just better a being a crawly arse bum lick than I was...

I do watch the numbers like a hawk and try to continually improve my round...were not full yet but the wages ain't bad considering that we have not been going 2 and a half years yet.

Dave.

I'm somewhere in between answer 1 and 2.

I don't "love it", but I certainly don't dislike it.
I quite like it, but I wouldn't do it for average shelf stacker wage.

I only do this job because it allows me to work around my illness to pay my bills and my mortgage. If I didn't have the flexibility this job offers I wouldn't bother working, I'd go and scrounge off the state like many others as it would beat working for peanuts.

Windows washed,

If you dont mind me asking, what is your illness?

Is it an old injury?

If you dont want to answer I understand and just ignore my post,

Dean.

Chronic arthritis, wouldn't wish it on anyone.

It's not too bad at best of times and suicidal when it's chronically flaring up.

I need to stay as positive as possible to mentally block out the pain and try to look at the bright side of everything in life otherwise I'd be wishing my life away due to depression.

I'll be happy to live a short but full and happy life taking advantage of all the good things in life on offer, rather than moaning and groaning, living a long, resentful life.

I've got this illness, which I've accepted and can't do anything about but I can change my mental outlook on life by remaining positive as it helps a lot.

Good on you mate,

A friend of mine has the same illness,

His wrists and ankles are worst affected,

He works for an insurance company doing telesales for what I can imagine is a poor wage.

Keep up the good work,

Dean

seconded, i was thinking about this the other day and i dont really enjoy cleaning, its a bit too monotonous to enjoy for long but on nice days its ok,

BUT being my boss, earning good money quite easily compared to other jobs, the fact that i can work when i want if i want to do more today and less tomorrow, thats up to me, if i dont feel like working till 5 i dont, etc etc, cant beat that, and not many jobs give you that freedom...

Echoing my thoughts :) Don't do gutters, but the rest is exactly how I feel. I'm sitting here looking at my work diary and the weather forecast and saying sweary words :D Tomorrow when I'm doing it, I'll be like a pig in ****/ it's natural environment.
All the best to all you guys for 2009.

I couldn't say I actually ENJOY it,  I wouldn't do it as a hobby!
But it beats all my previous jobs into a cocked hat.
