Title: RO Outside
Post by: DaveG on January 03, 2009, 03:06:30 pm: Just in the process of building my RO Static system (as you probably noticed because of all the questions!!)

The thing is my IBC etc will have to be housed outside,,,

Down the side of my house ive got a tap, power socket and a drain so its the best place for it .
Now i know it needs insulating but what do you guys use?

Im going to build a wooden sort of "lean to" around it with a felt roof and ive got some 4" polystyrene insulation lying around from some building work ive had done, and was going to put this between the studs of the lean to.

Im going to make the lean to large enough to house the RO and all the pipe work etc so nothing will be technically "outside" , so do you think this will still freeze up?

There must be some of you that have there systems in sheds/outhouses......how are you getting on with this weather?

Post by: matt on January 03, 2009, 03:39:33 pm: they key here is your power socket, you will be able to put a oil filled rad in your "lean-to / box" aswell as the insulation, you will have anice and warm RO

The R/O is housed in a large plastic type keter shed
This time of year I leave an electric heater on frost setting 24/7
There is also enough room for our hosereels too.
The reels freeze very easily as they are full of water!
Only problem I am having is with the pumps in the vans they are freezing
despite having small heaters on overnight.
Going to have to get bigger heaters for them or make a removable pump box
and tuck them up in the shed.
Roll on the spring!

but the R/O has loft insulation wrapped around it
And the heater as mentioned

You can see my parrifin heater thats on 24/7 over the last week and the temp in there is around 5-8 all the time! does the job.

My IBC is outside that water did freeze for first time in the week but under the water was fine to be pumped out.

Post by: kris martin on January 03, 2009, 09:47:28 pm: mine is in the shed and it froze up badly so i insulated the shed and it has been fine since, i also use a trolley and take that in the house every night so shouldnt have a prob with that freezing... but use isopropanol just incase... my hose that delivers the water to my RO runs outside and that always freezes so i have to put that in the shed from time to time to thore it out..

It did start to freeze once in the prefilters. I put the ro on a pallet so it was off the ground and it never happened again.

no it was sorta open to the elements. Was wrapped up well though. It was a temporary measure.
