Title: Whats your tax bill?
Post by: Dean Taberner on December 16, 2008, 04:27:50 pm
Hi all,

Just wondering what the average tax bill is?

Ive just been hit with a £6k + :o :o :o

Its a lovely Xmas present. Especially as ive lost a £12k a year contract due to the collapse of the building trade and been ripped off for nearly £7K by a fraudster and paid out £2k+ in wages and diesel to get the work done.

Bring on 2009 I say. :-\

It was through doing boots and abbey nationals all over my area and beyond through sub contracting. They were weekly cleans. At first I got paid regular and then it slowed down.

It turned out the woman who I was subbing off had run her company in the ground ripped of me, 2 of my mates and a factoring company for over 200k, VAT fraud the works.

It's funny isn't it.

When I was employed I was forking out about £450 a month on tax and £120 (+) on national insurance contributions.

As an employee that must've been around £7K tax per year I paid; probably more; and I'm going back about eight years ago.

I don't pay anything like that now; but then again I'm a Geordie and most of us work in a cash based industy.  ;)

Mines hardly anything, but when i put my accounts in in april i'm going to get hammered because of this payment on account, or the fact that you don't pay anything for the first year.

My first year was a standing start and i had high start up costs so little was due.The tax partnership i left mean't that she(my wife) got clobbered with a bill this jan similar to yours although i phoned them and have been paying by direct debit before it becomes due.

They have guessed my tax to be the same this year ( which it isn't) and then they will want much higher payments on account too, so once again in jan i am going to ask for an arrangement even though i don't declare untill april.

When you have steadied after about three years your tax reflects your earnings, before that it's either nothing or a lot.

Ive had a guiness and a glass of wine now and ive chilled out. :P

Im happy to be paying into the country but I hope gordon can spend it wisely  :-X

My bill was quite low last year - only about £700 in all.  That was caused by having very high capital outlays to get WFP started though.  It meant that the profit margin for first year WFP was actually a lot lower than the last year of trad.  Also, it took a year for my turnover to start feeling the benefit of WFP as I opted to have more time off rather than fill in the resulting gaps with work.  Not sure what I will be paying this January yet.  I know my income was higher but there are also other capital items that will start to kick in as well as the lower, second year of items from the previous year.  My accountant has had all the paperwork for a while and I expect we will be meeting straight after Christmas.  January 2010 is when I will really get a whopping bill as my turnover went up a lot and there will be a big payment on account differential to make up.

Post by: Oakley Windows on December 16, 2008, 10:42:34 pm
Im expecting some sort of a hefty rise this year being nearly a year WFP.

After converting from trad I had an immediate and quite dramatic rise in income due to the higher output possible with WFP. Nearly a year down the line my income is 50% higher.

I still have some capital expenditure to go through the books and Id say my reciepts are pretty hefty but Im gonna have a sizeable bill this year me thinks.

Thank God its done monthly.

my last bill was 9k for the yre :(
that was including class 4 ni.
i also pay vat on the flat rate of around 15k.
so thats 24 k in tax.
i do pay my dues .
i was better off on the ladder with nout but my ladder.
my fellow wc around here vary from paying nothing to similar amounts as me .
i hate paying all this tax ,which is wasted on dole cheats and the like.

I dont get this, if you pay 15k in vat then your tunover must be over 150k, so how come you only pay 9k in tax?
Plus you cant count vat as YOUR tax bill as you simply collect it for Customs.
Title: Re: Whats your tax bill?
Post by: eddie d on December 16, 2008, 11:23:54 pm
i sub work out as well and have other expences.
you can say that your just collecting the vat but the reality is that -
if the customer cant claim the vat back and they are happy to pay say 115 including vat ,they would be happy paying that amount regardless.ie if i wasnt vat liable i would charge 115 anyway .

Fair enough, but dont claim the 15k as your tax liability, it doesn't work that way with vat.
Title: Re: Whats your tax bill?
Post by: eddie d on December 16, 2008, 11:29:52 pm
i think it does work that way .its just another tax.
i dont see any advantage to paying vat .its just that when your turnover is above 67k you are liabke for vat

some people just want to argue, if he turns over 150k he has wages say at least two people vehcle running costs maybe a unit stationary and office spending banking charges any loans or finance canvassing/telesales costs insurances maintence and new equipment costs employees nat ins covering holidays paying holidays and then he would take some profits has divedens.

Its a bigger picture than most think so that has to be considered before they question WHY he only pays 8k tax.

Not sure if you classified me as a low payer but no, I don't have any employees.  Bear in mind that my first year with WFP involved a lot of high putlays with a turnover that was marginally below my last year on the ladder.  The turnover could have been higher but because there were a lot of difficult distractions in my personal life, I chose to have time off to sort things out.  This meant that by the time my capital allowances were taken into account, my profits were very low.  This was only sustained because a) the capital expenditure was made with loans that had low repayment rates and b) I increased my level of personal debt.  Of course that is not sustainable but was necessary to get me through a difficult time away from work.  I'll be paying for that for several years to come but I have no regrets.  I now need to squirrel away as much as possible for future tax bills while repaying a higher level of debt - just as the economy seems to be going belly up.  So yes, my tax bill was low but only at the expense of higher future bills.

Accountants no of ways and means, the billionaires will have the best accountants and save a hell of a lot of money.

I know it's not much of a comparison, but those billionaires/millionaires who work the system so they pay miniscule amounts of tax comapred to their personal fortunes are imo no better than those who sign on the dole and then work cash in hand....they are both cheats and dont contribute fairly.
The only differance is the big boys hide behind massive companies which the governments make huge taxes from...but their personal fortunes largely remain intact.
Title: Re: Whats your tax bill?
Post by: Tosh on December 17, 2008, 10:15:10 pm
He got it wrong, the very rich do pay large amounts of tax, personal and through there businesses.

A billionaire would contribute more tax to the government in a week than the average working man in his lifetime.

Maybe he should go and do another course!

I thought this post was about income tax and not about other forms of taxation?

I'm always willing to learn though, and in actual fact I'm currently reading a book on how Medieval Kings raised money to go to war via taxation.  It's an interesting tome too!

But as an accountant once told me, if you don't pay tax, you've earnt sod all money.

there is some truth in billionaires not paying much tax as non doms or in the case of philip green his wife holds bhs etc and is registered to nice. Branson is here, but many of his businesses operate from foreign bases.

They can also stucture their money differently. Many give much to chairty, but this isn't because they are nice, it's because they are control freaks who beat the system this way.

The current govt (gordon brown) has a deliberate policy of keeping them here and the only way that works is by letting them get away with murder. These people aren't very nice. they tend to have high IQ's, but are as morally bankrupt as the average serial killer.

They mostly don't think they should pay tax because they are the wealth creators, but don't factor in that they operate in a safe and stable (well it was) economy. Or else they consider a few quid for a knighthood or large sum for a uni library named after them and a lordship a better spend all round than just handing it over to the tax man.

For the two historians the knights templars were the boys, absolutely brilliant, they paid no tax because their allegiance was to god. They became the richest men in europe and invented the modern banking system (promissary notes/ cheques).Sheep was the internet of the day, and markets were a good earner too. Many of these clever men are barristers and a secret network still persists.

And ended up being roasted by the French on Île de la Cité, Jaçques De Molay being the last, fascinating.

They do still exist, as Discount said, but not that secretive in fact ( http://www.templars.org.uk/ )and certainly by no means in the manner that they used to operate, well no crusades these days for starters, more a charitable organisation.

The book The Religion is probably one of the best books Ive ever read, its about the Templars last stand on the island of Malta, totally and entirely engrossing.

The current govt (gordon brown) has a deliberate policy of keeping them here and the only way that works is by letting them get away with murder. These people aren't very nice. they tend to have high IQ's, but are as morally bankrupt as the average serial killer.

I am sorry for not being eloquent enough to put my point across! :'(
The quote above does however seem to do the trick! :P

I am not advocating "Tax evasion" each person should not be a burden to a fellow human being...
Each should drag his own sorry hide to the tanner!  8)
As for being the wrong time of the month... more like wrong time of the year! ;D ;D ;D
