Hi to all,
I'm just starting up in the window cleaning business and would be very grateful if you could give me some tips on the best way to get customers?
Is it best to leaflet drop and advertise in the local paper?
Any other ways to get new customers?

If you have half a dozen domestic customers then I would canvass around them as a first off.

Personally, I got all my customers through leafletting. I did advertise in a local paper but at £70 for a small add with a circulation of 5k I didn't get my monies worth.
People do say that door knocking yourself yields a better return but not everyone wants to do that.
You would do well to put some detail in your profile to give us some idea about yourself and where you are based.

you have to work hard.. very hard, its takes time to build a decent round, put flyers out , knock on doors.. ask for recommends... advertise in local parish...
eventually you may need a van, if you decide to go wfp.... then get it signwritten... its basically free advertising..... then you may afford a cigar... for all your hard work..
but you will never watch the money roll in... you have to go out and earn it. every single penny....

do some of your customers out side normal working hours- evenings when we have some, or weekends. people sometimes don't realise they need a window cleaner till they see one working, and they won't see you working when they are out

Forget fliers and forget advertising as it's big expense for very little gain.
People want to see who they're gonna be dealing with and who is going to be on their property and in some cases their homes.
Be prepared for some terse people but in my experience these are the very small minority. The worse that people can say is "no"...and you do get used to "no".
When I did shed loads of canvassing my usual average was 3 "yes" per hour (with the recession that may well have changed)...but think about this...
If you canvass for 5 hours and pick up say 10 customers who agree bi-monthly @ a tenner a go that's 60 cleans a year for £600. Canvass for 30 days and suddenly you're earnings (theoretically) are £18k per annum.
I know of few businesses that can give a headline profit of £18k within one month from a starting point of zero.
If you're gonna rely on advertising and leaflets then you can knock a 0 off my figures.
Lastly don't believe the guys on here who say: "Don't price too cheap as you'll regret it later on".
My ethos: Price keenly...get the work on board and money on yer hip. You can always dump the underpriced stuff at a later date...thus allowing the Newbie to continue the circle of life ;D
