I had a new customer the other day that was wiping the windows with a rag after i had wfp'd them! And she said she didnt like the sills left wet! I kept my cool and just said ok shall i leave it in the future??

But what i really wanted to say was ......."WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN IT RAINS??????????"

It's funny really isn't it - I fully sympathise - I do a sheltered accommodation complex for a dozen or so oldies and they can be sweetness and light or really irritating!

Another "oldie" I do is Mr. F________ (No, really! ;D) in a close of six houses where I do four of them and I was recommended to him by another neighbour. Anyhoo it turns out he knew my father when they were kids before WW2 so a nice connection I thought.

Trouble is he's been getting grumpier and grumpier over the last year or so... first it's the wfp/trad switch over (oxidised 1980's single glazed ali windows) which now come up well. Then he wipes around the upvc of his new front door while I do the windows to the side; then I get told his (manky, cruddy, minging ali) patio doors leak so could I be careful.

Then "hang on while I move the plant pots" (I offer to move them but no he can do it - like a snail); then mind your hose doesn't pull another stone out of the patio wall like it did last summer; then mind the hole in the front window (where some chav shot thru' with an airgun five years ago) ..... and can you put the doormat back when you've finished (I always do)

Now he's becoming rude - I always knock and start cleaning and last time it was "Oh, it's you!" accompanied by rolling eyes; to which I reply through gritted teeth "You don't sound as if you appreciate me coming Mr. F_____________" "No, no I'll open the gate (at snails pace)"

Finally I knock for payment..."I s'pose you want payin' now!"

"Yes please that would be nice!" I respond cheerily.

I'm on the point of ditching the old goat! If it wasn't for the recommend and the history with my dad and the fact that when I'm feeling less sensitive I reflect that if I was 80+ with a crippled wife then I'd prolly be a bit grumpy too!

I think in the new year I'll come out with "This arrangement isn't really working is it Mr.F?"

Malc, you're probably an safety valve for the old bugger...somebody to take out life's frustrations on.  ::)  I had one of my old wrinklies the other day:

(With an accusing, hurt and hard done by look) "You said you'd be here at 9"   It was 9.15...which is on time in my book! I just said sorry I'm late, did her windows, drank the cup of tea she insists on making me over a chat in the kitchen, caught her cold, took her tenner/Xmas card and left wondering  "Why do I do these silly under-priced jobs"?...Opened the card and there's a crispy fiver...and I thought to myself: "That's why".

A 1/4 of my work is sheltered housing which are run by charitys so residents live there for nothing and pay nothing towards the up keep of the biuldings. When doing these i find this is where you get the most complaints moaning, whinging etc, I Have a few where we just miss them out fall stop. I think it must be a old school thing were the oldies are used of a ladder & bucket window cleaner.

Am I the only one who wipes the sills then  ??? Obviously not the tops but I always wipe the bottom sills. I find it gives you a last chance of checking the windows after polling them.

I don't wipe the sills as I don't make 'em wet in the first place...Trad and proud ;D

But if I were wfp I'd feel obliged to wipe the sills...which of course would mean getting up ladders which sort of negates the safety aspect of wfp...it's a real conundrum ::)

They might be wet but there clean, and by clean i mean right underneath the sill in the little groove that you trad boys miss everytime when i pick up your work. ;D

Simon a lot of trad window cleaners wipe the sills as well in fact most do and I have heard complaints about those who don't, and yep I wiped them all when I was trad. ;)

I am usually really good but I don't go to work to be abused, she swore at me 4 times and stuck her fingers up at me. I don't care how old they are I just don't need it when I'm trying to earn a crust!!!

Sounds like Nana from the Catherine tate show  ;D

NWH I assure you that you don't pick up any of my work (unless of course you've recently started to operate in London SW15 in which case you wouldn't be wfp).

Chris: The vast majority of the houses that I clean have concrete sills that are painted and flaking so impossible to wipe clean. If it's the occassional upvc sill and it's minging then I might (just might) give it a quick wipe down. But I charge to clean the glass and it's never been suggested to me that I wipe down frames and sills by any of my customers so I'm not about to start that malarky and make a rod for my own back ;)...ner! ;D

Ive found over the years the first question 6/10 times is "do you clean the frames".
Now before we went sfp 4 years ago we always wiped sills but now with wfp gets done anyway. I Found i picked most of my work up advertising the fact we wiped frames and sills as most in out area at the time didnt.

i am wfp and on top windows i run my brush along top sill and on bottoms i have always wiped them. they all like it and it gives you a more proffesional approach, because wet sills does leave marks .i know it does after the rain but they can only blame the rain then.

I've found it to be about 1/50.
Do you live in some sort of grimy industrial area?

People are grateful that they get frames done, but no-one asks.

How can you tel they are as clean as what you state, without going up ladders or hanging out the window it would be impossible.
I am wfp and clean the sills as best as i can think without going up ladders, but on occassions when i do a gutter clean,of which i do use ladders,i can see that sometimes the sills do have more crap on them than i thought...

When I heard you saying (paraphrasing a post or two you made a few months back) you don't get the "good luck" that Ian Giles and Roy Harding get when it comes to recommends I thought it was just you being negative, Rog. - but thinking about it when I have asked custies why they recommended me they nearly always said something like "because even though you aren't cheap you wipe the cills and do the frames".

I've come to the conclusion that doing the frames and cills (even if frame tops and edges are every other clean or third time in reality) is the best antidote to the wfp haters you'll ever get - at best you get good paying recommends, at worst you are tolerated and not dropped.

What does it take to run a brush along the top of a cill and wipe the high eye-ball ones downstairs with an old towel?
