Title: What type of rug is this?
Post by: Fraser Thom on December 08, 2008, 01:02:14 pm
Ok, any help you can give me would be appreciated here guys and gals.

I have been asked by a customer to clean this rug.  It has various stains and marks on it, including candle wax.

First up, can anyone tell me what type it is and how best to clean it?  the only way I can describe the feel of the material is it's like a very hard straw.   I feel that it is going to be a long shot but I did a lot of work for this customer and didn't want say no without investigating first.

Run like the wind.

It's some type of natural fibre. It won't like being wet cleaned that's for sure.
Shrinkage and water marks are likley to occur if you attempt hwe.

The best you can do IMO is to offer a dry granule type clean. But be sure to tell the customer that results will be very limited.

I have heard of people using a very fine mist of MS prior to the dry clean, I've never tried it and wouldn't risk it myself.

its sea grass or sisal or something like that, cant really be cleaned, might be able to get the wax off though if you heat it up, but then it might catch alight, cant dry compound it as it can leave patchy areas, better off just handing it back nicely and slowly running away ;)

An oxymoron if ever I saw one! :)

Oh and by the way, I fully agree with Russell's comments on what it is and the success of cleaning.

Steve Austin used to do 30mph in slow motion and make a weird metalic twanging sound at the same time. :)

Hi Guys

I would agree, there are going to be dimensional issues if you wet this.

The local dry cleaner is probably the best bet.

Cheers
