Title: Tax back for people with kids
Post by: LWC on December 02, 2008, 08:05:02 pm
I have a customer who is a finacial advisor and he asked me today if i had any kids, the answer being yes and then the next question, would you like £520?

There was some tax code change in this year but its not been made public and you have to chase it. So

You can claim the Children's Tax Credit if all of the 3 following apply

1, You have a child living with you for a least part of the tax year which you are claiming
2, the child was under the age of 16 years at the begining of the tax year for which you are claiming for
3, the child is you own (including step or adopted)

I have wrote this out quickly as i cant copy and paste it. I think it is if you had a child between 1986 and 2003 you can claim for this money.

Take a look for yourself, you could be £520 better off...and if you do remember me in your will.

a few on other forums have been getting the money, it does actually go up to just over 1 K if your earnings are below a certain threshold

Ive just had a quick search, little more info

Parents - Does The Taxman Owe You £1,500?
If you had a child born between 1985 and 2003 you may have missed a tax refund worth up to £1,500. Did you:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q1 - Have a child(ren) born between April 6th 1985 and April 5th 2003?
Q2- Work and pay tax (or live with a partner who worked and paid tax) between April 2001 and April 2003?
Q3- Did the highest earner in the family earn £6,000+ in one or both years?

Did anyone try?

just a update on the whole thing

you had to send it to your local tax office, they decided they couldnt cope, so boxed them up and the tax office set up a special dept for the claims in leeds ( at least i think it was leeds ) all the forms then got sent to leeds, they say it will be UPTO 3 months before they get them all done

Hi Guys,

I heard about this last week, the only thing I would add is that you need to get your form in by the 31st Jan! Don't hold me to this though, I'm just going on what I've been told!

Cheers

Can do it over the phone - 0845 300 0627 which is quicker

Website is www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/11ctc.pdf for the form but need to do it fairly quickly.

At least by phone you know it's done - can't rely on the post.

When you download the form it tells you on the same page, and dont forget you can only claim for the youngest child, if you put all your kids on the form they will return it, and you only have untill the 31st jan to get them in otherwise you have missed the boat and you wont get anything.

its the thing they had the 1 yer before child tax credits, it was a tax break that they failed to inform the public about

so even if you get child tax credit, you might not have had this

Now don't hang draw and 1/4 me but why do people get benifits for having children...is it not a lifestyle choice for most?

Cheers
Dave.....

Do you have kids?
Title: Re: Tax back for people with kids

No I do not but that is our choice.

Given that in these times migrant workers from low skilled to highly qualified and experianced professionals now work all over the world and to some extent are mobile...the agrument of we need children to be the next Doctor, lawyer, window cleaner are becoming a little dilute.

So I ask resepctfully and not just to push someones buttons...why do we allow people, couples to have children when in some cases the burden on society far outweighs the projected benifits to said society?

Another point of note is that our system (and world) is full of children needing (despretely) a loving home but many are just left to the care of the system for their entire lives or left to die. So sometimes I see those having their 'own' children to a certain extent as a selfish act.

Respectfully
Dave.

Well then you wouldnt know how much they cost us  ;D

And we recieve help. Me and my wife are both hard working and dont scav off the goverment...but if we're entitled to it then we'd be stupid not to take it do you not think?

Dave,

Historically, the government has always encouraged us 'plebs' to do the stuff they want us to do via the tax system.

The government WANTS us to have kids.  Given that we have an ageing population, our kids will turn into the 'money makers' of the future and pay for our pensions.

Also, kids born into poverty aren't as healthy, bright, or well-adjusted as those from more affluent families (usually).

So families with kids get financial help from the state!

See your point LWC...but looking at the system would it not be far more sensible to say adopt, foster etc ....?

Dave.

Yes, possibly it would but not everybody is equipped to deal with the possible emotional issues a child up for fostering or adoption may come with.

I know sometimes it is a genuine problem like a young mother or where children are orphaned but sometimes these children are taken from their parents for reasons of neglect or abuse and these children are perceived as more difficult to deal with.

I am not debating the right or wrong of it, that is just how I see it.

Would it not be fairer to say that in the main...neither of these choices are ever considered...so those with the most need rarely get it and those who need a few quid...can just claim it.

Just a situation where noone really wins...but a very high % of losers.

Cheers
Dave.
