Accountants are for dimwits who can't read or add up. ;D
Our tax returns were in months ago; all paid up; and we continue to pay the tax man a set amount by standing order to cover 08/09; so we're actually in credit with him.
How smug are we!
I'll get my coat...

Ronnie,
We all pay our 'lump sums' in Jan and July, it's called paying on account.

Don't forget the Taxmans website is never very clever when everyone tries to file their returns online at the same time - If you don't manage to file it before the site crashes as it does most years you still get fined for being late!!!

all done and dusted had rebate aswell already spent that paying for van this month
-
tosh i thought you said you paid yours by standing order?

I do, but my monthly standing order overpays what I'm due to pay each July and January; so when each lump sum is due, I've 'saved' up enough to cover that lump sum.
I received a rebate this year because I'd overpaid, but I keep paying monthly because it helps me to budget. I just consider it another bill.
Leave me with too much money in the bank and I'm always tempted to go spending it.
It works. If you want to know how to do it, I'll explain, it's easy to do if you use internet banking.

still waiting for my rebate ???

Tax is depressing. Why talk about it unless there is a way to save some. 31st Jan is the deadline, a reminder 10 days before would be ok. Otherwise think about Xmas or anything.

tosh yes you could do so basically the so pays the tax bill so no big lump sums??
i know i sound thick ;D

Ronnie,
Firstly, the difference between a standing order and a direct debit basically means that with a standing order you have complete control over how much and when you pay; with a direct debit, a certified company can withdraw funds from your bank at anytime.
So we're talking standing order stuff here, it's easy to do.
The tax man's account details are as follows:
Account number: 23456000
Sort Code: 10-50-41
You need to use your UTR (Unique Tax Reference (you'll find it on your tax statements)) as a reference when inputing the details.
Obviously, firstly phone the tax man and check that the details I've given are correct; I could be giving you my bank details. ;D
As to how much you pay them, have a look at how much tax you paid last year, divide that by 12 (months) and add maybe 10%. That'll be your monthly standing order payment amount; though you may have to pay more depending on how much your turnover increases.
You'll still have to make the Jan 31st payment though; but if that's giving you problems you can phone the tax man; they're 'fairly nice' people and arrange a payment plan. I've had to do that in the past.
